In case you haven't been following along:

  • Tulsa Athletic moved in recent years to play at Tulsa Athletic Community Field at Hicks Park

  • NSPL has stated they cannot play here, as it is an open park

  • The problem is that it is very clearly not an open park, as you can plainly see on Google maps). The facility is fenced in, meets NPSL seating requirements, has separate locker room and restroom facilities per NPSL requirements, has a single point of entry and exit per NSPL requirements, and generally meets every single requirement NPSL has listed on their website.

  • Tulsa, in this detailed thread states they have attempted to communicate this to the league to resolve the problem and have gotten zero meaningful response from the league, and are forced to take legal action to seek an injunction to play at the facility this year.

  • Worth noting, they played at this same facility when winning the 2023 NPSL Championship, and use it for USOC games which have stricter requirements than the NPSL does. FC Tulsa of the USL Championship has also used it for USOC games previously.

As far as anyone can tell, the NPSL's reasoning is nonsense as to why Tulsa cannot use this field. And now the league appears to be suspending them for the year, presumably over Tulsa's threatened legal action on this issue.

If you've been following the NPSL, they have been hemorrhaging their top clubs to USL2 and USPL, with terrible leadership being cited consistently. This appears to be another well-run club the league is set to lose over a ridiculous reason.

Another well-run former NPSL club, Minneapolis City SC, has vocalized their support for Tulsa in this issue as well.

Tulsa has some posted some pics from preseason that show the field from ground-level, show the entrance and exit, show the clearly visible surrounding fence and stands, etc.

The Minneapolis City SC founder has suggested he may drop some other bits of NPSL stuff from the club's time in the league

Edit: The club has put out an official statement after being formally suspended from the NPSL for the 2024 season and being unable to defend their 2023 title.

Official Statement

It is with great disappointment that we must announce that we will be unable to defend our 2023 NPSL national championship. The attached letter of suspension from the NPSL board of directors cites no specific reason as to why Tulsa Athletic are suspended.

We worked tirelessly and in good faith to reach agreement with the league in recent weeks, but this was the final result. Our lawsuit against the league remains pending.

Although this decision was given to us less than a week prior to the first match of the season, we remain committed to bringing top tier soccer to Tulsa and Athletic Community Field at Hicks Park.

We are sorry that a team of committed players that came to defend a national championship was stripped of this chance by the NPSL board of directors. We expect to announce matches for the summer soon.

We will continue to strive to do what is best for our fans, our players, and our club. Though we do not accept this decision and find it entirely unjust, we remain committed to playing entertaining soccer this summer. Yours in soccer, Sonny Dalesandro, Dr. Thomas Kern, Alfred Mockett

That field looks like the ideal NPSL size stadium

It's honestly a great stadium and nice quality field for them.

I wonder where USL2 sits on this. I recall going to final last season at Starfire, which has a locker room/bathroom that I usually use when I'm coaching out there. I used that bathroom during the match because the stadium bathroom was busy. They were definitely using that as their locker room though. Maybe I wasn't supposed to go in there but nobody stopped me.

Yeah I’ve definitely taken a leak next to Bwana and Kovar during open cup matches and I’m like oh okay that’s neat for fans but I’d probably not like it as a player.

Wonder if it has to do with their beef over their stadium.

u/Coltons13 avatar

Almost certainly has to do with their recent post threatening legal action against NPSL leadership to seek an injunction to use the stadium, yeah.

If things go south (which I hope not); any chance they go to UPSL or a local league in the area?

u/Coltons13 avatar

They do already field a club in UPSL, so likely there year-round I'd guess. But USL2 may also be an option.

“Push it out” is an interesting choice of words.

If I hear anything new on this issue. I’ll be sure to pinch one off.

If new information comes to light, I promise to take the Browns to the super bowl.

I bet it makes quite a splash.

This is ridiculous. I thought MLS was ran poorly

USLC has team in Tulsa with 5k attendance and growing. Tulsa athletic has been out competed as a business.

NPSL is a semi pro league. It is not really the same product as fully pro leagues

u/Coltons13 avatar

Huh? Who cares? That's not remotely relevant here. They're not even directly competing, Tulsa Athletic is an amateur club. Whether or not they're successful as a business (and they seem plenty popular among Tulsa fans themselves) is irrelevant to whether their league is currently fucking them over.

But for funsies, they sure weren't out-competed when they beat FC Tulsa in the 2023 USOC directly. They also drew several hundred fans to their mid-week USOC debut this year when they lost to Northern Colorado. I think they're doing just fine for an amateur NPSL outfit.

Right now the soccer market is falling into it's either MLS or USL. The other leagues are failing. NPSL kicking out Tulsa is a sign of more to come. Tulsa might be missing payments or something

u/Coltons13 avatar

Tulsa might be missing payments or something

They're not. The league has only stated the field "is an open park" meaning not fenced in per NSPL requirements, which is incorrect.

But also, again, the broader context of soccer in this country is irrelevant to this specific topic. NSPL has leadership issues, but other leagues certainly aren't failing. USPL isn't failing, the growing regional amateur leagues aren't failing. Again, NPSL isn't a competitor to pro MLS or USL leagues/clubs.

u/SomeCruzDude avatar

The other leagues are failing.

UPSL, especially on the men's side, and WPSL on the women's side have been doing just fine lol

There are leagues outside of USL and MLS that are doing poorly like NPSL and NISA, and then there are leagues not connected to pro orgs that are doing fine too

There is a LOT going on outside USL and MLS, especially in the amateur level (not to mention events like TST). NPSL has absolutely squandered their opportunity to be the place to incubate and grow the independent club scene, which is a shame, because I don’t think L2 has been nearly as good of a fit for the clubs NPSL’s leadership has driven away.

You’re out of your mind.

As someone who lives here, both clubs have an audience, and a lot of us go to both.
