Fans of Square Enix’s groundbreaking Dragon Quest series will be pleased to learn that Dragon Quest 12 is unaffected by the company’s recent change in business strategy.
The Final Fantasy company announced a move away from platform exclusive launches earlier this week while also canceling a large number of games currently in the works.
While no specific names were mentioned, fans of the Dragon Quest series were concerned that the next entry in the franchise would be scrapped, delayed or reworked. However, that doesn’t appear to be the case.
Via Bloomberg reporter Takashi Mochizuki, Square Enix has confirmed Dragon Quest 12 is currently unaffected by the recent change in strategy. This means that the game is still in active production, and will likely release across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2 and/or PC.
“I know some were concerned about the status of DQ12 after the writedown announcement, so I really appreciate Square Enix for issuing me a comment to say the game's production is alive,” the reporter said. “Thank you.”
News surrounding Dragon Quest 12 has been uncertain following recent events. Alongside the passing of the franchise’s art designer Akira Toriyama, Square Enix’s change in direction left fans rattled.
However, it seems that Dragon Quest 12 development is continuing, and Square Enix’s new focus on multiplatform releases means more players will get to experience the game on launch.
Alongside the new game, Square Enix is also developing a HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 3. Dubbed Dragon Quest 3 HD, this remake uses the same tech seen in Octopath Traveller to recreate one of the series’ most beloved stories. (It’s no Dragon Quest V, though.)
While the mainline games are seemingly unaffected by Square Enix’s new business strategy, other titles could be. This means that fans could see less spin-off titles in the series over the next few years, especially following poor sales of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince.
