Jimmy Carter has exceeded the nation's expectations as he approaches 15 months in hospice care — and according to his grandson Jason Carter, the former president remains calm as he confronts the end of his life.

On Tuesday, May 14, Jason spoke about his grandparents during an annual mental health forum named after Rosalynn Carter, who died in November at the age of 96.

“My grandmother’s passing was a difficult moment for all of us, including my grandfather,” Jason said, adding, "The outpouring of love and support that we, as a family, received from people in this room and from the rest of the world was so remarkable and meaningful to us, and it really turned that whole process into a celebration.”

Offering an update on his 99-year-old grandfather, Jason said that the former president is "doing OK."

"He has been in hospice, as you know, for almost a year and a half now," Jason said, "and he really is, I think, coming to the end that, as I’ve said before, there’s a part of this faith journey that is so important to him, and there’s a part of that faith journey that you only can live at the very end and I think he has been there in that space.”

During his speech at the forum on Tuesday, Jason also chuckled while recalling a story that hinted at people's surprise with how long Jimmy has been in hospice. It was a conversation between him and his grandfather that happened while they were watching an Atlanta Braves game.

"I said, 'Pa Pa … people ask me how you’re doing and I say I don’t know,' " Jason light-heartedly remembered. "And he said, ‘Well, I don’t know myself.’ And so, he’s still there."

Jason, who now chairs the human rights organization his grandparents co-founded after leaving the White House, told PEOPLE ahead of Jimmy's 99th birthday in October that being "physically limited" has been frustrating for the once-active peanut farmer, but that it's allowed the former president to reflect on his life and be "at peace with whatever comes."

"These last several months have been surprising for all of us," he acknowledged at the time, "but it's been a real blessing."
