King Charles and Queen Camilla attend St Paul's Cathedral a week after skipping Prince Harry's Invictus Games service

King Charles and Queen Camilla donned their finery to attend a Service of Dedication at St Paul's Cathedral on Wednesday morning (Wednesday evening AEST).

It comes exactly a week after the monarchs skipped a similar service at the cathedral to mark the 10th anniversary of Prince Harry's Invictus Games.

In a case of life imitating art, His Majesty looked resplendent in a red cape, which gave him a striking resemblance to his new painted portrait unveiled only a day earlier.

The vibrant red painting by Jonathan Yeo has divided royal fans but the artist explained the colour was chosen on purpose to make the monarch's face stand out, instead of his Welsh Guards uniform distracting the eye.

The King and Queen's arrival at St Paul's was nothing but eye-catching as the couple walked the stairs with a royal helper holding the train of His Majesty's cape.

Camilla wore a cape without a train and did not have an attendant following her.

The couple were greeted by Lord Mayor, Alderman Professor Michael Mainelli, who was also in a red velvet robe with a chain collar similar to the monarchs.

The Service of Dedication was for the Order of the British Empire (OBE) of which the King is the Sovereign of the Order of the British Empire.

The Queen is the Grand Master of the Order of the British Empire, hence the pair wore the traditional capes.

Almost 2000 Order recipients, which includes GBE, KBE, DBE, CBE, OBE, MBE, and British Empire Medal, were among the guests gathered inside the cathedral.

That makes it the biggest indoor gathering King Charles has attended since he began treatment for an unspecified cancer diagnosis in February.

However, the King has attended one event that's been bigger since his return to work two weeks ago - the Buckingham Palace Garden Party, attended by some 8000 guests.

That event last week was one of the reasons the King and Queen didn't attend Prince Harry's Service of Thanksgiving for the Invictus Games.
