James Grise Obituary

James Mitchell "Mitch" Grise, 69, died April 19, 2024, in Colorado Springs, CO. He was born May 15, 1954, in Albany, GA, to James K. Grise and Betty Jean Richardson. He grew up in an Air Force family and graduated from Mitchell High School in Colorado Springs in 1972. He worked in apartment maintenance for White Peak Management.
Mitch was generous, open, and kind. Married for more than 50 years, he filled his wife Sue's life with music, color, surprise, and unconditional love. Together they raised their own three remarkable children and opened their home to countless others. Mitch's hospitality was a byword, his kindness constant, and his humor quirky and unexpected.
He faithfully served through his church, Victory World Outreach, for five decades. During joyful revival times and in spite of spiritually lean times, Mitch only saw people; people he treated with grace, inside and outside the church, because he never forgot God's grace to him. He pursued excellence in music, drama, private prayer, 'grunt' work, and friendship.
Mitch was a lifelong artist, a tireless worker, a curious reader, and an enthusiastic traveler. His most prized possessions were his home and his guitar, and he used both to connect with whoever came. Our loss is uncountable, but Mitch's adventure is just beginning.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie "Sue" Gramer Grise; his children Joy Grise, James Grise, and Brian Grise and wife Jacqueline; his siblings Brian Grise and wife Elaine, Laura Grise Freeman, Robert Grise and wife Debbie, and brother-in-law G. Joseph Gramer and wife Sarah Rohrs; nephew Jesse Goodman; and niece Sarah Lawson and husband Chase and children Ella, Wyatt, and Garrett.
The family is grateful for the flood of love, memories, prayers, and kindness at Mitch's passing. Memorial contributions may be made to the missions fund at Victory World Outreach Colorado Springs, to Compassion Intl., or to the National Geographic Society. A memorial service is planned for Saturday May 18, 2 to 4 pm, at HarvestDowntown on the corner of Boulder and Weber in Colorado Springs.
