[May 10, 2024] IGN: Why the Zelda Movie Director Wes Ball Won't Reveal His Favorite Zelda Game

The best call he could have made.

I'm not expecting the Zelda movie to be based around any one game in particular. I'm expecting it will take bits and pieces from various Zelda games. With little references to other games in the movie as well (similar to the Mario movie).

Well Wes for what it's worth, it's not just Zelda fans, its every franchise!

If anything, fans should be relieved since his Planet of the Apes film turned out so well.

I mean, if he said X game people would assume the movie would be inspired by X game. Better to keep quiet until the movie is out.

Someone ask him his favorite DDR game

Probably a smart decision.

Movie's going to be like The Wand of Gamalon.

He's never even heard of Zelda I knew it. Hollyweird, you've gone toot fart!

If he said Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, or whatever the press would run with it and say it may be based on that game or say he is dropping a hint.

Considering I saw people tearing him down because he said the movie needed to be "more grounded and real" (than a hypothetical 100% mo-cap Zelda movie he pitched on Twitter in 2010) - makes sense he's deciding to just keep his mouth shut.

Zelda means a lot to him, he doesn't want to get into specifics because it's very personal. Very personal. BoTW or ToTK? Probably equal.

When he was asked the question and I first saw the clip his facial expression seemed to say that he wanted to say something but he had to think about it and make the choice not to.

People on this site are a great example, every time he says something about Zelda people read what he said in weird ways.

It's kind of a moot point anyway because I imagine he has little control over what games/story elements the movie will draw from.

The people just aren't ready to know it's a Link's Crossbow Training adaptation yet.

Apes was pretty damn good, I have faith that at minimum Zelda will look good.

His favorite is Zelda II and the movie will be all side scrolling.

Should have just deadpanned that it would be a shot for shot remake of the CDi game.

Actually I take it back; this would've been a brilliant answer. Shows that he knows the deep lore of the series but also makes light of the question and is a non-answer.

I know that face. It's the face of someone thinking about a long response why game X is their favorite but he ultimately realises it's not worth the trouble.

For the best. I have very little hope in a live action Zelda, but like pre-emptively leave this dude and everyone else involved the fuck alone. It's gonna be what it's gonna be. Maybe it will turn out OK, who knows. Hope for the best. I know scores of "fans" are going to be really shitty and nitpick and track every little detail surrounding this film like freaks and harass him, the writer, whoever they cast, etc for any apparent failing or wrong opinion. But man I really hope not and people can just be decent.

Mario already had a kind of shitshow element to it, especially with the Right doing their woke BS whinging, but Mario is a nothing series story and character depiction wise compared to Zelda, so it was kind of a minor event in the grand scheme as most people loved the film and raked in massive cash. But way more people have real deep and intense feelings about Zelda's story, characters, etc, it's gonna be messy once details start rolling in. I do not envy whoever they cast as Link and Zelda.
