After streaming on Netflix just a few months after its theatrical run, Missing is all set to drop on SonyLIV (also on OTTplay Premium). Adapted from a screenplay by Sev Ohanian and Aneesh Chaganty, the 2023 mystery thriller Missing, written and directed by Will Merrick and Nick Johnson, will start streaming on May 24, 2024. Nia Long, Storm Reid, Joaquim de Almeida, Amy Landecker, Ken Leung, and Daniel Henney are among the stars. After June Allen's mother goes missing while on vacation in Colombia with her new boyfriend, the story follows the girl as she searches for her.

Missing plot summary and themes

The creators of Searching have delivered Missing, an exciting, suspenseful mystery that will have you questioning your familiarity with the people closest to you. As June (Storm Reid) tries to find out what happened to her mother (Nia Long) while she and her new boyfriend are on holiday in Colombia, international bureaucracy gets in the way. June, stranded hundreds of miles away in Los Angeles, musters all her ingenuity to use the cutting-edge technology available to her in an attempt to locate her in time. However, June finds out that she never truly knew her mom when she uncovers secrets through her internet investigation, which leads to more questions than answers.

Merrick and Johnson edited Missing, a spiritual sequel to Run (2020), and Chaganty directed it.

After making its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2023, Sony Pictures Releasing released Missing in the US the day after. With $48 million in ticket sales, the picture was well-received by critics.

Creative collaboration and directorial vision

The three suspenseful films are all brainchildren of director, screenwriter, and producer Aneesh Chaganty, so it's not hard to draw connections between them and find hidden references to them in Missing. While Chaganty was in charge of writing and directing Searching and Run, he conceived of the idea for Missing but let Will Merrick and Nick Johnson—the same people who edited Chaganty's earlier films—take the reins for screenwriting and directing. Movie editing holds significant importance, particularly in Searching, where computer technology plays a crucial role. Merrick and Johnson came up with a fantastic plan for Missing.

In his first two features, they paid tribute to Chaganty by implying their shared universe through subtle references. They emulated David Kim and his daughter Margot Kim's narration technique in Searching, using June's laptop. While they did inject Missing with their own directing style, they stayed true to Chagnanty's original concept, which allowed audiences to see the strong connection between the three films.
