  • Altered will play at the Cannes Film Festival and is expected to be released in 2025.

Harry Potter actor Tom Felton will star in the upcoming $15 million action sci-fi movie Altered. Felton rose to global prominence when he played the role of Harry Potter's nemesis, Draco Malfoy, in the hit movie adaptations of J. K. Rowling's beloved fantasy novels. Surrey-born Felton played the role in all eight Potter movies between 2001 and 2011, and has enjoyed consistent work in film and TV since leaving the franchise, most recently starring in Joel David Moore's 2023 psychological thriller Some Other Woman.

According to Variety, Felton is set to star in Altered, described as an action sci-fi movie that will explore important themes. He will play the role of Leon, one of "two courageous outcasts" living in an alternate present where most of the human population has undergone genetic enhancements, who battle for justice in a society fractured by genetic disparity. The movie will be helmed by Finnish director Timo Vuorensola, who is best known for his 2012 movie Iron Sky, and it co-stars Richard Brake, Igor Jijikine, Aggy Adams, and Liza Bugulova.

Could Altered Finally Establish Felton As A Successful Leading Man?

Felton Has A Solid Career, But Hasn't Grown Much Beyond Harry Potter

Due to the success of the Harry Potter movies, Felton is a well-known name in the industry, but he is yet to establish himself as a prominent leading man in film or television. Since departing Hogwarts, he has co-starred in movies including Feed, Braking for Whales, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes; additionally, Felton guest-starred in The Flash and Origin on television. Despite a successful career, Felton hasn't found a particularly major role outside of Harry Potter, and Altered could go a long way toward helping him achieve that goal.

Harry Potter star Tom Felton played Julian Albert on The Flash, but here's why he left after his single season and if he would ever return.

The movie is set to be produced by Art Galaxy, Well Go USA Entertainment, Splendid Entertainment, and Studio Atlantic, and according to Variety, the movie will be presented at the Cannes Film Festival. With a 2025 release set for Altered, hopes will be high that the film can enjoy long-term success across multiple platforms and could perhaps lead to additional movies. Altered could even join the list of Felton's best movies that aren't Harry Potter.

While in-depth details about the movie are under wraps for now, the fact that Vuorensola is in the director's chair should be viewed as a positive. The director has a strong sci-fi and action background, which makes him a fine choice for telling this story effectively, as well as being able to blend genres seamlessly. It remains to be seen whether the movie will get a theatrical release, and, if so, for how long. Felton is likely hoping to use Altered as a springboard for future roles as well.
