Known in WWE circles as Reggie and SCRYPTS, Sidney Akeem recently discussed his imminent exit from World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
Following a report by Fightful that WWE chose not to renew his contract, Akeem confirmed he would become a free agent on June 1st. During his WWE tenure, he notably captured the WWE 24/7 Championship and later appeared on WWE NXT as SCRYPTS.
In a candid conversation with Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, Sidney Akeem opened up about his departure. The transcription of the interview was provided courtesy of Fightful.
“The situation is quite positive. I was informed about three or four weeks ago,” Akeem shared. “I have maintained a really positive mindset. This is unlike a few years back when releases were devastating. Nowadays, I know it’s still quite challenging, but my headspace is good.
“I’m incredibly excited about what lies ahead. Many might not know that I spent 16 years in the circus before wrestling. I was willing to give that up and hit the independent scene, but I ended up with a WWE contract. Now, I’m ready to embrace the independent circuit once more. Numerous organizations have been in touch, and I have various projects lined up. I’m looking at a very bright future.”
Sidney Akeem on His WWE Departure: “It Was A Great Conversation, The Door Isn’t Closed”
Akeem recounted the details of the conversation about his WWE exit, emphasizing that it was left open-ended.
“The talk was quite positive,” he remarked. “Usually, it might be a simple, ‘We’re going in a different direction. Best of luck.’ However, I received a call from someone I share a strong rapport with who said, ‘Reg, I regret to inform you of this.’ At that moment, I knew my contract wasn’t being renewed. But he made it clear, ‘The door isn’t shut, it remains open. You’re an immense talent and a pleasure to have around.’ That was a very complimentary exchange,” he recollected. “My thoughts went to, ‘If I’m that excellent, why can’t I stay?’ But ultimately, it was a good talk. My thought was, ‘What’s next?’
“The important thing for me was leaving without any bitterness. I am naturally a very positive individual. Though I face personal difficulties like family issues and friends passing away, I am leading a life many would envy. I can’t be anything but grateful. This is just another challenge to overcome. The call was by no means negative.”
