Eleven members of North Wales Road Runners competed in the gruelling Great Orme fell race, which attracted 150 hardy athletes, and is part of a challenging midweek series of similar events.

Jonathan Kettle led the team home in 17th place overall in 36 minutes and 35 seconds, with Steve Mason close on his heels and finishing 19th in 37.13. Veteran Kevin Slattery followed up his excellent performance in the Snowdonia half-marathon with another good result in 46th place in 41.42, and Adam Lemalle was pleased with both his run and his time after finishing 69th in 43.41.

Steve Bozier continued to rebuild his fitness and he was 89th in 47.06, with Richard Scamans 115th in 51.07, whilst Nicola Wylie was 120th in 52.13 and she also won her age cat. and it was good to see Elizabeth Driscoll returning back to form with another good run in 122nd place in 53.13, with Nia Lister 147th in 64.26, and Helen Hannam 148th in 64.59, whilst Gwennan Charlton was 149th in 66.17.


After the race, Jonathan Kettle confirmed: “It was a very tough race with two summits of the Great Orme with 1300ft of elevation over 4 miles. Absolutely perfect weather and although it was such a tough race, it was also so enjoyable. A perfect way to spend a Tuesday evening on the trails running with friends. Great to see so many NWRRC Club runners attend and some fantastic results.

The 1st finisher overall at the Great Orme fell race was Cai Dafydd (Eryri Harriers) in 32.28, with Gavin Roberts (Calder Valley), 2nd in 32.40, and James Coleman (Meirionnydd), finished 3rd in 34.01. The 1st female was Martha Owen (Deeside AC), 13th overall in 35.50.

Welsh Master vet David Gibson wins TCS London Marathon age cat and sets fastest UK time.

Welsh Master vet David Gibson wins TCS London Marathon age cat and set the fastest time in the UK... https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com www.welshmastersathletics.co.uk   Just a couple of weeks before his 72nd birthday, Tri Hard Harrier, and Welsh Master - David Gibson won the VM70 category at the TCS London Marathon held on 21st April, beating 198 other category participants.  With a personal best time of 3 hours, 13 minutes, and 31 seconds this is understood to be the fastest male 70-74 time in the UK, and the third fastest in the world this year to date! The 2024 TCS London Marathon was also the 2024 Welsh Road Marathon Championship race.  David had an operation at the beginning of January, and so he missed four weeks of training. Masters Half Marathon International England v Wales Great Manchester Half Marathon Sunday 26th May 2024.   Report and photos  courtesy  of the Welsh Masters team manager Bernie Jones. The second of this year’s Masters Road Internationals was held within the Great Manchester Run Half Marathon and a small team (once again compared to England’s huge team) turned up in Manchester City Centre and achieved the best results we have so far in any of the Master internationals that we have held in the past three years.  This time the Team competition was in 10 year age groups with Wales having teams of 6 from ages 35 through to 65+. Blue runners wanted for 400th Conwy parkrun on 18th May! NWRRC official and Conwy parkrun volunteer and regular MC John Hatton says he is trying to attract 400 runners for the 400th Conwy parkrun on Saturday 18th May. Entry parkrun is free for all parkruns, and it starts from the RSPB site near Conwy each Saturday starting at 9am.  He confirmed: “It’s Mental Health Awareness Week that week, so I have spoken to  Mind Conwy . Their colour is blue, so I am trying to encourage people to run in blue, or to even wear some fancy dress costumes.” *John Hatton  is pictured (*above) at Conwy parkrun.

Volunteers and entrants wanted for Welsh Masters T&F championships at Yate on Sunday 21st July 2024. Report by Don Hale. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com www.welshmastersathletics.co.uk The Welsh Masters Athletics Track & Field championships will be held on Sunday 21st July 2024 as part of the Avon/Yate AC Masters Open Championships, and potential entrants are advised to register as soon as possible due to the expected demand for places. It will be staged at the Yate outdoor sports complex and is being organised by the Yate & District AC.  And Chris Pruski from WMAL is also appealing for at least three more people to make themselves available on the day to help out with a variety of voluntary tasks.   He confirmed: “I am appealing for volunteers for our WMAL champs on 21st July, without much success so far. Blessed with unusually good weather, very little wind, and with an atmospheric touch of mist in the distance surrounding the iconic Conwy Castle, people from all parts of the country boosted the number of local entrants to this regular run, with everyone determined to enjoy and celebrate this special occasion. Report by Don Hale. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com www.welshmastersathletics.co.uk   Due to the Bank Holiday weekend, the numbers of North Wales Road Runners entered at Conwy parkrun were somewhat depleted last Saturday, with many members opting to go on their travels to compete as visitors, at a variety of other parkruns around the UK. The results however still remained impressive despite a hot day, and mixed weather over the preceding days, which all contributed towards the usual array of challenges over this picturesque out-and-back 5k course, from the  RSPB Nature Reserve. There were just seven NWRRC entrants amongst the near 300-finishers, with  Will Williams  winning his VM50 age cat following an impressive run in 18 minutes and 22 seconds in 4th place overall, with  Steve Mason  also on good form in 9th pla

Photos by John Hatton. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com www.welshmastersathletics.co.uk   There was a good turnout of NW Road Runners at the Essa Chester half-marathon race last Sunday morning, and they all competed well, and celebrated with three age cat podium places despite the hot and challenging conditions. Martin Green  looked back to his old self again and led home a team of fifteen members, to additionally win his MV45 age cat with a superb chip time of 1 hour 15 minutes and 10 seconds, finishing well in 13th place overall, out of nearly 6,000 entrants. He was one of three NWRRC members who celebrated podium positions, with Martin’s wife  Carla Green  finishing 3rd in her FV50 cat as the 20th female, whilst veteran  Rob Fryer  also took the 3rd spot overall, and the 2nd chip place position in his MV65-69 age cat. Stuart Culverhouse  was the first NWRRC athlete home in 41st place overall with an impressive chip time of 1.47.38, but the club chairman and top veteran athlete  Kevin Slattery  was perhaps the pick of the team after winning his MV65 age cat with a superb performance in 70th place in 1.53.36. *And as a note of interest, Kevin’s son  Ian Slattery,  who was visiting, also ran well, and he finished 23rd in 1.42.58. *NWRC chairman Kevin
