Golf world number one Scottie Scheffler detained by police ahead of PGA Championship second round

Professional golfer Scottie Scheffler has been detained by police while trying to enter one of the PGA Championship's golf courses.

The PGA Championship - organized by the Professional Golfers' Association of America - is currently taking place at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky - having begun yesterday (16 May) and set to finish on Sunday (19 May).

The annual golf tournament attracts the best men golfers such as number one golfer in the world, Scheffler, however, earlier this morning (17 May) the pro was unable to get to the course for the second round, with footage emerging online of the 27-year-old in handcuffs, being led away by police.

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington was the first to break the news, taking to X to share a video he took of Scheffler getting 'arrested'.

The footage shows a bus, alongside multiple police cars with their lights flashing.

Scheffler can be seen with his hands behind his back in cuffs, being led by two officials in hi-vis jackets.

Darlington tries to follow after the golfer but is repeatedly told to stand back, an official telling the camera: "Right now, he's going to jail. He's going to jail and there ain't nothing you can do about it."

Another post by Darlington alleges Scheffler was 'detained by police in handcuffs after a misunderstanding with traffic flow led to his attempt to drive past a police officer into Valhalla Golf Club'.

A spokesperson for Louisville Metro Police Department told ESPN the traffic around the golf course was the result of a man being fatally struck by a bus after trying to cross the road at around 5:00am.

Scheffler then reportedly tried to keep driving towards the golf course

The reporter continues: "The police officer attempted to attach himself to Scheffler’s car, and Scheffler then stopped his vehicle at the entrance to Valhalla.

"The police officer then began to scream at Scheffler to get out of the car. When Scheffler exited the vehicle, the officer shoved Scheffler against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs.

"He is now being detained in the back of a police car."

As a result of the incident, the second round of the PGA Tournament has been pushed back.

It was meant to commence at 7:15am ET but is now expected to begin at 8:35am ET.

A statement from Louisville Metro Police Department reads: "About 5:00 ET this morning, the LMPD responded to a call of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian and a bus. Our preliminary investigation found that an adult male pedestrian was crossing Shelbyville Roadsouth to north when he was struck by a shuttle bus that was traveling eastbound in the compulsory center lane dedicated for buses.

"As a result, the pedestrian received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. The LMPD Traffic Unit is investigating."
