Americans win two ITF Masters World Team Championships and four individual titles
Earlier this month in Mexico City, the United States claimed two championships at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Masters 50, 55 & 60 World Team Championships. The American Vonn Cramm Cup (men’s 60 & over) and Maureen Connolly Cup (women’s 55 & over) teams were both victorious in their respective divisions. The Vonn Cramm Cup team beat France 2-1 in their final, while the Maureen Connolly Cup team swept Italy 3-0.
The tournament is the tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup competitions, with top American tennis players representing their country in the 50-, 55- and 60-and-over age groups.
The Americans also lifted four titles at the ITF Masters World Individual Championships. Eoin Collins was the top player, winning two titles in the 55 & over bracket. He defeated Australia’s Igor Jovanovic, 6-0, 6-1 to successfully defend the singles title he first won a year ago, and also teamed with Australia’s Garry Nadebaum in doubles to defeat Portugal’s Nuno Delfino & Brazil’s Marcelo Amaro da Silveira Maciel, 6-3, 6-1.
In men’s 60 & over doubles, American Scott Works joined the Netherlands’ Frans Grimbergen to defeat Spain’s Miquel Puigdevall Lamolla & Mexico’s James Zambernardi, 6-7, 6-4 [10-4].
On the women’s side, the 60 & over doubles team of Americans Vicki Buholz & Christine Paulsen defeated teammate Shelly Works & Sweden’s Stina Mosvold, 5-7, 6-3 [10-8]. American John Saviano finished second in the men's 60 & over singles championship after falling to Spain’s Pablo Semprun 6-3, 6-4 in the final.
