Barrington High School in lockdown after 'threat'

Multiple Barrington schools were sheltering in place because of a disturbance that took place at Barrington High School this morning. Police have been on scene at the school for more than an hour and have apprehended at least one person, according to student witnesses who saw a male being taken away from the varsity soccer field near the student parking lot in handcuffs.

Barrington High School Principal Chris Ashley released a brief statement just before 9 a.m. saying that the school had entered an "unplanned" lockdown. He later released another statement saying the "school is safe but remains in lockdown."

Barrigton Middle School and the district's four elementary schools were sheltering in place. Middle School Principal Andy Anderson released a statement at 9:41 a.m. saying all schools are sheltering in place and that "our students are safe and will remain inside for the time being."

Barrington Police Capt. Kevin Igoe said that at approximately 8:30 a.m., an incident occurred outside the school, on the soccer field near Upland Way. He said the threat was "taken care of" quickly.

As news traveled, high school parents drove to the area and stood outside the school, watching and waiting for news. Police said shortly before 10 a.m. that there is no active threat.
