Multiple Owen athletes take gold at NCHSAA 2A West Regional

Warhorses and Warlassies send more than 20 to state championship

Owen High School records fell and medals were raised, May 10, at the NCHSAA 2A Track and Field West Regional in Connelly Springs.

The Warhorses and Warlassies, who each finished fourth overall in the competition, claimed a total of 12 medals, while 21 Owen athletes qualified for the NCHSAA 2A State Championship meet, set for 10 a.m., Friday, May 17, on the Marcus T. Johnson track in Greensboro.

The Warhorses were led by Trevae’ Woodyard, finished first in the 100 meter dash and 300 meter hurdles, establishing Owen records in both events. The senior, who also holds the school mark for the 200 meter dash, posted a 10.73 in regional 100 meter and a 39.29 in the hurdling event.

Woodyard earned another gold, along with teammates Taj Burgin, Josh Hollowell and Keron McLeod, with a 1:30.83 showing in the 4X200 meter relay. McLeod, Hollwell, Woodyard and Abraham McTeague-Pospishil claimed second in the 4X400 relay, posting a time of 3:33.89.

A bronze finish for the 4X800 meter relay team of McTeague-Pospishil, Harding Kinnaird, Leo Parmenter and Steve Garcia qualified for the championship meet, while Kinniard added another bronze with his showing in the 3,200 meter run.

Craig Webb and Brodie Webb, who finished fourth in the 3,200 meter and 1,600 meter runs, also earned spots in the state competition.

The Warhorses finished the day with a total of 10 medals, including three golds, a silver and two bronzes.

Warlassies junior Ashley Currie, who claimed gold in the 200 meter dash, set the new Owen record with a 26.42 in the event. Senior and recent Montreat College commit, Nevaeh Perkins, broke her own school mark with a 2:22.05 and a silver medal in the 800 meter run.

Currie, Perkins and teammates Abbie Reitzel and Ady Draper added another gold in the 4X400 meter relay, teaming up again for a silver in the 4X200 meter.

Owen junior Sierra Honeycutt gave the Warlassies another first-place finish, clearing the high jump bar at 5-feet-2-inches, while the 4X100 meter relay team of Perkins, Currie, Draper and Lilly Berry added to the overall medal count with a bronze.

Four more Warlassies — Piper Berry, Jordan Robertson, Lauren Tressler and Peyton Draper — earned a trip to the championship meet with a fourth-place showing in the 4X800 meter relay.

The Warlassies finished the competition with six medals, including three golds, two silvers and a bronze, while 10 athletes qualified to compete in the upcoming state championship.
