A Grayslake-area man was pronounced dead after a house fire early Sunday, according to Lake County authorities.

The identity of the man, 44, has not yet been released.

His body was found in his residence in the 17800 block of West Winnebago Drive in the Wildwood neighborhood east of Grayslake.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the home at around 12:40 a.m. Sunday. They found the man’s mother, 63, outside the home. She told them she was able to escape, but that her son was still trying to get out.

Deputies tried to access the house, but were repelled by thick smoke, the sheriff’s office said. Gurnee firefighters arrived with protective gear and were able to enter. They found the man unconscious and not breathing.

Lifesaving measures were attempted, and the man was brought to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though police said it does not appear to be suspicious.
