on bethel island in contra costa county. thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 5. i'm noelle bellow and i'm grant lotus. it is really a scary reminder of just how important it is to stay safe in the summer months. kron four's rob nesbitt. >> spoke with a first responder and joins us now in the studio with their advice this evening. rob. >> granda, well, more people will be spending time by the water as temperatures warm up. but this is also when rivers are moving dangerously fast during the snow melt and important time to be vigilant. the middle of may and california's rivers are moving fast and cold. it's a dangerous time to be in the water and first responders have been busy. the waters of the san joaquin river in stanislaw county clarmed the life of a 30 year-old woman after she jumped in the water to save her 11 year-old daughter. we've had, you know, multiple. >> fatality incidents just in the last week contra costa county, a 5 year-old boy drowned over the weekend on bethel island. >> larry collins with cal oes fire and rescue says each

fatalities serves as a sad reminder of the importance of water safety. exactly what we've been warning against. have a flotation on your body when you're in or near that cold water. >> staying out of the current really aware of where you are in relation to fast-moving current may is recognized nationally as water safety month and the organization courtney's cause works to prevent drownings, especially among kids. >> director of operations catherine rich says anyone living near water needs fiscal ways of stopping their kids family with a dock. >> with the river like pretty ups to their house, having some way that barrier that would prevent a child from being able to access whatever of water that is safety measures at your home and on vacation. >> as families prepare for trips this summer, ridge encourages parents to keep water safety. a top of mind. i was actually looking at resorts this morning and

>> and what a beautiful day it has been has been warm in some of the inland spots. on the other hand, it's been quite chilly at the coastline, low clouds and fog. lots of moisture heading right along the coastline. so whether you're right there at embarcadero with the exploratory and you can see the bucky ball hits a sculpture out their tribute to tuchman strip alert. that's beautiful. but it's not been hot along the coastline. course, where you see lots of gray. so as you can see outside our live cam network is showing not just people you can see the leaves of the trees are going blowing a little bit. and some of the palm fronds in the earlier shots. it's just beautiful conditions. temperatures very nice. but as the winds, that's the main thing going on right now outside right now going to the golden gate. we're seeing the wind's going to close to 20 miles per hour and a little lighter and some parts across the bay area. so that's it for now. i'll be back with a look at the 7 day forecast coming

up in just a few minutes. thank you, kathy. >> new at 5, a man has been convicted of killing a woman whose remains were found in alameda last summer. the alameda county district attorney announced this afternoon. joseph roberts has been found guilty of second-degree murder for the killing of rachel buckner buckner's from pleasanton. her body was found dismembered along the shoreline of bay farm island last summer. police say buck there and roberts live together at the time of the murder. no word yet on when roberts will be sentenced. >> oakland's new police chief has officially begun his tenure in the town. floyd mitchell started the day by meeting new recruits and other members of the department's mitchell last worked as chief in lubbock, texas. he says one of his main goals as the top cop in oakland is building public trust. in a brief statement, he said he's looking forward to working with the community. >> looking forward to working with you and with members of

the community to can say someone to spend the rest of this week attending different meetings to get brought up to speed on several different things going on within the local police department and within this community. >> while burglaries in oakland are down by 46%. violent crime is up 14%. that includes robberies up 37%. mitchell met with the command staff today about the latest crime figures. reporters were not allowed to be on hand there to ask questions. opd says that opportunity will happen in the coming weeks. we're going to have more on the chiefs the first day on the job coming up on kron. 4 news at 6. >> community members across the bay area are remembering the lives of 2 political leaders in the east bay, peggy moore and her wife hope would were killed in a car crash over the weekend in san diego county. former oakland mayor libby schaff says moore had a true passion for helping other people. more with shafts campaign manager when she ran

for mayor in 2015 she had been that. >> state director for obama >> she agreed to be the campaign manager for one term councilmember who was challenging the incumbent. this is back in 2013, 2014, you could not walk anywhere with peggy without it taking like 2 hours, she knew every person. and if she didn't know that she would just strike up a conversation and get them. >> oakland representative barbara lee shared her sadness saying she's heartbroken, said peggy was a friend activist and one of the best organizer. she knew. more and would created a political consulting firm in twenty-twenty called hope action change. the couple met while working on the obama campaign in 2008. >> demonstrations in support of the palestinian people in gaza continue on university campuses. as you hear there,

folks cheering as a graduate, walked across the stage, waving the >> palestinian flag at uc berkeley's law graduation ceremony over the weekend. there were also protests on saturday during the main graduation ceremony. protesters have been camped out on the university's campus now for 3 weeks. meantime, jewish students organized a rally on stanford's campus yesterday. they say it was a way to express support for stanford's mission of diversity. some students say they feel pressured to keep quiet and can't speak up freely about world events. others even feel like they need to hide their face because of all that's going on in the middle east. >> a setback today for the nevada teachers union, which has been trying to put a stop to the public funding of a new a's ballpark in las vegas as kron four's dan kerman reports now the nevada supreme court has ruled the proposed ballot

measure to put the question up for a public vote was written improperly, which will now push a public vote to 2026. when the battle lawmakers approved spending 380 million dollars in public money to help fund a stadium in las vegas last june. the nevada teachers union took steps to reverse that decision by putting the issue toaa public vote. this november. now that won't happen. the nevada supreme court upheld a lower court ruling that the proposed ballot measure was not written correctly and petition signatures cannot be gathered until it's read and to comply with state law fighting billionaires is never easy. this is just minor setback. alexander marks but the teachers union schools over stadium says the ruling means the measure won't appear on this november's ballot because now there are only 44 days left to rewrite the petition and then collect the 102,000 signatures with no state elections in 2025. that means the next chance for a public vote is november of 2026. but

schools over stadiums remains undeterred. this still remains incredibly unpopular locally. it still underwater 20%. >> you know, preventing the teachers from going out there ensure every student has a high-quality public education is probably not going help with their polling either. but, you know, we we remain committed to try and help fix the misguided priorities of the state. so not much has really changed. in a statement, the attorney who represents the coalition opposing the ballot measure, which includes the a's, was pleased with the ruling saying all nevadans have a right to participate in direct democracy, but they need to observe the laws that require properly informing the voters of a proposal. this measure failed to do that. all they did was delay if they were hoping for a quick decision and calling it a day and saying that they want that's not what they got today as part of a 2 pronged attack, schools over stadiums has sued the state of nevada saying the passage of that funding measure violates nevada state

constitution. that case is yet to come to trial. dan kerman kron, 4 news. just a month after the a's announce their move to sutter health park in 2025. in sacramento, the park started offering. >> membership deposits for the a's inaugural season in west sacramento clicking on, joined the a's list on the team's page center. health park website brings visitors to an online shopping cart. but the option to purchase a membership deposit for 100 bucks. it is unclear purchasers of the deposit are able to pick their seats at the time of purchase. >> more folks are getting back on the ferry these days. the san francisco bay ferry says it has broken a ridership record for post-pandemic morning commute. ridership. there was a big jump on the oakland roots. the service says it had more than 2300 riders a day last week.

returning to pier 80 in san francisco despite some bay area residents and officials calling for its removal or perhaps relocation due to all the noise it generates. yeah. there's been some complaints over the past couple years. kron four's lezla gooden explains what the festival plans to do differently this year. >> portola music festival is returning to pier 80 in san francisco for its 3rd year in a row. the festival has not only made a name for itself with its musical lineup, but also for its noise, complaints or how with by brady >> we thought it might have firework. for david of rana could jack up heavy have lived in alameda for 25 years. >> and recall hearing the music across the bay kind gets wrapped. it has that, you know, we're not it came out of the blue, you know, in 2023, many residents and alameda complained about the loud music so much. the alameda officials were seeking to prevent the festival or haven't relocated. the city

says the festival scheduled to take place september 28th and 29th is making an effort to reduce the noise and vibration levels. some of the measures include lowering the volume and pace levels. sound checks days before the festival ending all outdoor music at 10:45pm on sunday and having a community hotline where residents can call and the festival can adjust sound levels and real time. >> i think the fact that they're even being aware of trying to bait. think about what you know, how it's going to i think that makes me feel much better about >> just got phone number call to get really left shoulder louder year. i totally agree. i like that better that. the city felt like what do you we reached out to golden boys who puts on the 2 day festival for comment. >> we're given the following statement. we will be monitoring and utilizing every option available to us at this

time to maintain sound levels within compliance. and city officials say they will share the community hotline closer to the event in alameda loves a good in kron. 4 news. the man convicted of attacking paul pelosi will learn his fate in federal court later this week. david de pap >> was convicted last year for the attempted kidnapping and assault of a federal official in october of 2022. during the trial, the pap admitted he broke into the pelosi home with full intent of holding nancy pelosi hostage. the pap is set to be sentenced on friday. federal prosecutors are asking the judge for a 40 year prison sentence. >> take a look at this. damage caused by a fire at a home in san jose. it started saturday. the cul-de-sac here, lake ridge lane. the home is now fenced in its firefighters, assess the damage and look for a cause. as of right now, we know 2 residents were displaced, but fortunately they were not injured. one

person was hurt at a fire at a hotel in san francisco's russian hill. this was yesterday morning at the broadway hotel on polk street. firefighters were able to quickly put out the flames. no word yet on what caused the fire. >> and a container of lithium batteries caught fire at the port of oakland. video from the citizen app showing a large cloud of black heavy smoke hovering over the san francisco bay yesterday afternoon, crews were able to get that fire under control, though, just a short time after those flames erupted. california state parks and cal fire. they're going to be doing prescribed burns at mount diablo state park. >> we'll be active in the mitchell canyon area until june 7th, depending on the weather and air conditions on any given day. so don't be alarmed. if you see some fire on mount diablo is we bring it here to san francisco. you see the bucky ball across the street from the crowd for studios on what was a very warm, pleasant day.

>> yeah, it started off a little cooler, but then it definitely warmed up as the day went last week are dealing with some winds. 3 us about our winds this week. kathy trafton is here with more details like happening. hey noel. well, the winds are still hitting specially right at the coastline, not as breezy as it was last week. that's the good news. >> we're in for a treat this week will be lovely. it depends on where you are. of course, right along the coastline. you're likely to see. well, of course, lots of clouds and fog and they'll start to burn off as the as the days go on. and what you see today is pretty much what you're going to see for the next couple of days. so we're into it that condition. this is the view from the berkeley hills. you see a lot of gray lot of gray, especially at the coast, pretty much wherever you are. if your coast side is great. but when you're inland, it did burn off a little bit earlier today. winds right now are just going right through the golden gate. you see at 18 miles per hour through san francisco and not quite as windy in santa rosa, 10 miles per hour, but 18 miles per

hour in fairfield, there is the fog. you can see it pushing right through. this is the future cast. this could be today. it could be tomorrow. could be the next day. we'll see a little bit of variation. but basically the story is clouds and fog will start to burn off in the afternoons. so you can see the future wind gusts. look a lot like today. it's beautiful conditions, but you have to like the wind and looking ahead toward the the high temperatures for tomorrow looking for 50's and 60's right along the coast side and in san francisco start to head south and inland gets a little bit warmer bay shoreline, mainly 60's. finally, a few 70's in the south bay, as you head toward 78 degrees right there in campbell. and 67 degrees also in dublin. so as we start to head in uc, not quite an ad. well, maybe 80 in the very far reaches of the east bay and in the north bay. but right at the coast to point rays, maybe 60 degrees. so there you go. great conditions. and the 5 day

forecast shows more of the same more of the same more of the same which is not a bad that i love today. it is. yeah, a copy and paste. it is so to get that big disparity. but from the coast inland starts to feel a little bit more like summer, doesn't it? sure you can pick what kind of whether you like and you can go thanks area. all right. >> san francisco city leaders celebrated the opening of the new panorama park over the weekend. the public park located on the island's highest point and it offers some pretty incredible views you can see in this the bay and san francisco skyline all visible. >> from this park. >> i don't know if i could ever really of magic it. when you see the pictures, what you here, people talk about it. it's one thing but to be in it, it's quite something else. it is magical.

>> the park features a 6 to 9 foot tall sculpture called the point of infinity by japanese artist hiroshi sugimoto. the new open space is part of a bigger project to bring thousands of new homes and parks too treasure. and your islands. >> san jose mayor matt mahan led a groundbreaking ceremony for a new effort to expand and improve their vietnamese heritage garden in kelly park. the garden was originally built in 2011 to honor the thousands of refugees who fled vietnam after the fall of saigon in 1975, the new plans. call for building a new garden with trees trails and benches. there will also be a space to host community events. the first phase of the project will include adding a statue featuring an american soldier and a vietnamese soldier standing side by side. >> our shared vision is a garden that remembers the past but looks ahead to the future that pays homage to the

>> alameda county district attorney pamela price is taking on major car insurance companies, including progressive and usa. according to the suit, the insurance companies have been working with software developers to undervalue cars that are totaled da price filed a 69 page civil complaint against the companies of using special software to lowball settlement offers to customers price as these companies are rigging the system and her office is working to try to level the playing field. >> some major airlines are not happy with a new rule that requires upfront disclosure of

service fees. now they're suing the department of transportation. the airlines involved in the suit include delta united, jetblue and alaska airlines. they claim that the new rule is an attempt to regulate private business operations beyond to the department of transportation's authority. they also say the rule will only confuse consumers and complicate the buying process. but federal officials claim this rule will and bait and switch tactics that the airlines use to skies. the real cost of discounted flights. they estimate this rule will save consumers more than 500 million dollars a year. now to a battle to stop the bird flu outbreak affecting the nation's dairy cows. so far it spread to 42 herds. in 9 states, health and agriculture officials are now pledging 2 million dollars to help farmers test their cattle and to compensate them for loss of milk production. many farmers have been reluctant to let their cows be tested out
