SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — The University of Rhode Island’s Cooperative Extension is offering a program that aims to help veterans foster agricultural careers.

The Boots to Bushels Summer Workshop Series is offering hands-on experience on the university’s new two-acre Boots to Bushels Market Garden at the Kingston campus.

A variety of topics will be covered in the workshops including soil health, water conservation, sustainable pest management, seeding and transplanting. Each workshop costs $10 to attend.

The program started as a way to connect veterans with careers but expanded to include more people. Now, the workshops are open to veterans, servicemembers and anyone interested in farming.

The workshops run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesdays. Anyone interested can learn more or register by clicking here.

Bob Flynn, director of URI’s Center for Military and Veteran Education, praised the program.

“It’s an excellent match to the skills and desires of many veterans,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing how this program continues to progress.”

In the future, URI said there will also be a winter portion, offering online classes and farm tours.
