Limestone County Coroner Mike West has released the identity of the man killed during an officer-involved shooting with Athens Police.

Maurice A. White, 40, of Athens died in the Wednesday night shooting, West said.

Police say they responded about 5:30 p.m. to a call where a suspect threatened the occupant of a home with a gun, fired the weapon, and then fled.

Athens Police say they located the suspect and tried to convince him to give up the gun.

Authorities say the suspect refused and ran away from the officers, running into a neighborhood on Songbird Drive.

Police say the suspect fired his gun and that the suspect was shot with a taser after refusing to drop the weapon. According to Police Chief Anthony Pressnell, despite the suspect being hit with a taser, the suspect pointed a gun at officers and was shot about 7:20 p.m.

Police say they attempted first aid on the suspect but that the suspect died at the scene. According to Pressnell, no officers were injured in the shooting.

Athens Police notified the State Bureau of Investigations, which will oversee an investigation into the incident.

West said an autopsy will be performed on White's body.
