Roberts has been a co-anchor on Good Morning America since 2005. Prior to that, she was a sportscaster for ESPN from 1990 to 2005, as well as a feature reporter for ABC News. What happened to Robin Roberts? Roberts, who was missing from the previous taping of GMA, showed up to the April 30 episode wearing a bandage on her wrist.

After airing a segment on tennis, George Stephanopoulos quipped to Roberts, “I hope seeing that tennis on the screen didn’t upset you. I’m aware you had a minor mishap over the weekend,” to which she responded, jokingly: “Oh, no no. You should’ve seen the other guy! I mean, I tried to uppercut.” The veteran journalist went on to explain that she took a “little tumble on the tennis court,” over the weekend and fractured her wrist, adding: “Maybe I’ll take up padel. Maybe that’ll be my sport.”

ABC News Correspondent Gio Benitez chimed in, “I know it’s been really painful, but listen — nobody makes a cast look cuter.”

Roberts elaborated on her injury in a video shared on Instagram that same day. “All my years of being a competitive athlete, my first fracture and hopefully my last one as well,” she said. The news anchor captioned the post: “Good Morning! Playing a little hurt this morning but Glam Fam and I would still like to share with you our #tuesdaythoughts #cmon 😘.”

The Mississippi native grew up playing basketball and tennis and even received a tennis scholarship from the Southeastern Louisiana University. She later switched to basketball and went on to become the university’s third all-time leading scorer and rebounder.

Roberts has been very candid about her health on the show. In 2007, she was diagnosed with both breast cancer and myelodysplastic syndrome (also known as MSD), which is a rare blood disease. A few years later, she underwent a life-saving bone marrow transplant with her sister Sally-Ann serving as her donor. “Five years ago I beat breast cancer and I’ve always been a fighter … your love, your support, your prayers helped me win that fight and that’s something I will never ever forget,” she told viewers in 2012 when revealing her MSD diagnosis. “Sometimes treatment for cancer can lead to other serious medical issues and that’s what I’m facing right now … I am going to beat this,” she added.
