She is the femme fatale who strikes fear in the hearts of the Fukrey gang: a one-woman army, ironically named Bholi Punjaban. Here is a brief chat with the thinking actor, Richa Chadha, on what is, arguably, her most loved character to date, and now three films old. Fukrey 3, after a successful run in 2023, premieres this Sunday on &TV.
You are playing Bholi Punjaban for the third time in Fukrey 3. This is also your first franchise. Are the second and third parts easier to play or more difficult than the earlier?
(Ponders) I would say that doing the subsequent films was easier for me, because you already know the setting, character, tonality, body language, the color of your character and how she speaks and behaves. So I guess you just have to manage expectations!
Your co-star Pulkit says that you have to be careful you do not go off-track for your character, or else the fans were immediately sense something wrong
I agree! I must tell you that Pulkit, as Hunny, keeps his gang together within the films and he also does that in real life!
Having said that, how come you are shown as such a devious woman and yet are fooled or conned repeatedly?
See, har criminal pakda jaata hai (every criminal is caught sooner or later). So Bholi ullu ban jaati hai (she is also made a fool of), for there is always someone smarter and more selfish. And that is also about the huge ego she has. She makes mistakes in trusting people. I think she is also a fukri, she hurts the Fukreys, pains them and yet is one of them!
At the time of the first Fukrey, you told me that you had to read up Psychology because you had to be gullible and cute and are still a ‘villain’
Really! I don’t remember saying that! (Smiles) But yes, I am intrigued that the girl can become a gang-lord of sorts at such a young age. There is really such colourful writing here, especially in the third part.
But you do work on your roles
Yes, I do research on what might be necessary to get into character. I even use a certain perfume while playing a particular character—that helps me create her personality and vibe as different from another of the roles I play!
Do you need to unwind after doing intense roles like Goliyon Ki RasLeela—RamLeela, Masaan, Shakeela, Love Sonia or the recent Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar?
Yes, I do, but the Fukrey franchise is the only exception. It is completely fun and enjoyable!
Both Pulkit and you have married within the industry. Do his wife, Kriti Kharbanda, your husband, Ali Fazal, and both of you meet outside your sets?
Yes, we do! We hang out quite often, at least once a month or more!
And when is Fukrey 4 happening?
I don’t know whether we can speak on this!
