Over $11 million was raised by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) yesterday evening for the organization’s annual Hot Pink Party, a fitting climax for an event with the theme of “soaring to new heights.”
Founded by Evelyn Lauder in 1993, the BCRF is the largest private funder of breast cancer research worldwide and has raised more than a billion dollars since its founding. “My mother remains our guiding light,” William P. Lauder said while accepting the Evelyn H. Lauder Spirit of Philanthropy Award. “Nothing would make her happier than knowing that BCRF remains strong and has continued to grow from just eight researchers to over 250 researchers.”
The award Lauder received is given to “a visionary individual, family, or organization whose altruistic impact profoundly improves the lives of others.” He was honored alongside Marenda Hughes Taylor, a flight attendant, who received the Roslyn and Leslie Goldstein Unsung Hero Award for her tireless support of Kristen Manion Taylor, Delta Air Lines’ senior vice president of in-flight service, after she received her breast cancer diagnosis. Manion Taylor presented her with the accolade.
The night was hosted by actress and model Elizabeth Hurley and included remarks from BCRF President and CEO Donna McKay and Scientific Director Larry Norton, M.D.. After dinner, the evening wrapped with a special performance by Nile Rodgers & Chic, who performed their hits, including “Le Freak.”
Other A-list attendees included Imaan Hammam, Karlie Kloss, Carolyn Murphy, Vera Wang, Cody Rigsby, and more. ELLE’s very own editor-in-chief Nina Garcia served as a co-chair of the event, alongside Michael Kors, Aerin Lauder, Donna Karan, and others.
“We’re enjoying each other’s company, but we’re here to be the end of cancer,” Norton told the crowd. “We’re going to celebrate our accomplishments, but give ourselves the task of finishing the job of ridding the world of cancer. To use one of Evelyn’s favorite [phrases], ‘We’re going to do it together.’”
