New Macon bar, named for owner’s late friend, wants to adopt customer interests. See inside

A new sports bar in north Macon gives patrons some say-so over what sticks and what doesn’t.

Located at 6351 Zebulon Road, T and Jay’s awaits music lovers in search of a simple, good time and genuine community.

“I just wanted to bring people together in a good atmosphere again to have fun,” he said.

Landry, who is also a construction worker, said he built a bar at his house and formed a mockingbird group during the COVID-19 pandemic, which fostered many great friendships and relieved his post-work boredom.

Friendship is the cornerstone of T & Jay’s, which opened April 15. The bar’s name honors Landry’s late close friend Jason Laster, better known as J-Fly, a musician who died of colon cancer in 2022 and was well-received by Macon’s music community.

“I just wanted to keep his name going,” Landry said after mentioning an article about Lester that patrons can read on the bar’s menu.

Like any typical sports bar, the pub has Atlanta Braves games playing on big screen TVs and darts competitions upstairs, but Landry said it also adjusts to the interests of its customers.

“I just go with the flow with what everybody likes. I live for the people and not what I want all the time,” he said. “We just want to try everything and bring people in that way.”

T and Jay’s offers entertainment for customers every day, including karaoke and DJ nights or “bring your own vinyl record day,” which allows them to flaunt their personal musical preferences.

Comedian Peter Revard, also known as Pistol Pete, made his karaoke MC debut at the bar on Tuesday night.

“I feel really comfortable there with just the few times I’ve gone,” he said. “You don’t feel like you’re at a bar. You feel like you’re at your friend’s house.”

Revard said he’s hoping the patrons will join in on the musical fun and not be afraid to act silly.

On Thursday nights, patrons can vibe with dynamic duo Bob and Blender – a Macon musician and his occasionally singing dog.

Nathan Jones, also known as Bob of the pair, plays live acoustic music at several Macon restaurants, with T & Jay’s being the most recent venue addition to his schedule.

“We’ve got entertainment that’s usually out on the porch or the inside patio if it’s raining. It’s a good group of people there. The staff’s really nice,” Jones said.

Jones said he performs a wide range of music, including his own unique covers.

Simple, effective menu

T and Jay’s menu sticks to a simplistic theme, using less ingredients to satisfy customers, Landry said.

“It’s something quick to fill people’s bellies up while they’re drinking. I’m not looking to be the best restaurant or anything like that,” he said.

The pub’s menu features simple classics priced $10 and under: buffalo or lemon pepper wings, chicken tenders, fries, fried okra, mozzarella sticks, chili cheese dogs, slaw dogs, cheese quesadillas, side salads and more.

Although the bar’s drink menu is not fancy either, house margaritas and cocktails drinks are freshly made, Landry said.

For $7, customers can get the J-Fly Special, which consists of a Jagerbomb and Pabst Blue Ribbon. For $1 more, they can order Terry’s Paloma, which has grapefruit, limes, tequila and soda water. Domestic beers and jello shots are also available.

Happy hour is every day from 4 to 8 p.m.

The bar is open from 4 p.m. to midnight from Monday to Thursday, and is open from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
