Explore New Worlds with Mammoth Overland’s ‘Tall Boy’ Off-Road Trailer - Men's Journal | Van Life Skip to main content

If you see a nasty, technical trail and think, “Challenge accepted,” then Mammoth Overland has you covered with the new Tall Boy Off-Road Trailer. This 16.5-foot long aircraft-grade aluminum trailer is made for explorers who want to enjoy the backcountry in comfort and style.

The monster Tall Boy sleeps four adults with a king-size bed and two bunks that can fit people over six feet tall. When not used for sleeping, those bunks convert into seating.

Mammoth Tall Boy

Its 9-foot height means tons of headroom, and there's storage and lighting throughout. USB ports everywhere keep all gadgets charged, and there’s a 42-inch LCD TV if you somehow get bored with nature.

Long-range comfort touches include a full stand-up shower, sink, and cassette toilet. The shower and sink serve up instant hot water, fed by the onboard 50-gallon water tank.

It gets cold in the hills at night, so the Tall Boy rocks a propane-fired Dickinson heater for condensation-free warmth. And in hot weather, two reversible fans in the trailer's roof act like a whole-house fan. The Tall Boy’s windows tilt outward for additional airflow and keep any precipitation out.

Power is provided by a Renogy 400-amp-hour smart lithium-ion-phosphate battery with self-heating technology for all-season capability. That battery is charged by twin 100-Watt Renogy flexible solar panels, or your tow vehicle's alternator while driving.

Mammoth Overland Kitchen

The Tall Boy kitchen features a sink, stove, and whopping 42-quart fridge. The kitchen is external via a fold-out counter.

But, mother nature doesn’t always play nicely, so the Tall Boy is equipped with a pass-through pantry that’s accessible both in and outside the cabin — as well as a 270-degree awning courtesy of 23 Zero.

All that sounds great, but what about the trail back into camp? No problem. Tall Boy proudly boasts a massive 22 inches of ground clearance. It rolls on 17-inch wheels wrapped in 33-inch off-road tires mounted to dual independent axles.

No word yet on breakover angles or articulation capability of the hitch. Dry, it weighs 2,900 pounds, so most 4-door Jeeps and SUVs can tow it.

Tall Boy is made for extended trips, so it boasts two full-size spare tires, a front-mounted exterior Molle panel to carry recovery gear, and a ladder leading up to the roof rack. The rack is rated to 1,000 pounds static and 500 pounds dynamic. That's plenty of capacity for long trips away from noise and light pollution.

All this rugged luxury does not come cheap. Pricing for the fully loaded Mammoth Overland Tall Boy “Genesis Edition” trailer is priced at $72,000. Like all Mammoth Overland trailers, Tall Boy is built to order. Pricing of standard Tall Boy trailers will be announced closer to the conclusion of this limited-run Genesis Edition.

Only 10 of these Tall Boys will be made, and Mammoth Overland is taking deposits now for deliveries beginning in the fourth quarter of 2024. Buyers can learn more about Tall Boy on the Mammoth Overland website.
