Why is Johnny Mathis so underrated now when he's still alive and kicking? You never hear him mentioned with the other GOATs like Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, David Ruffin, Sammy Davis Jr., Luther Vandross and Smokey Robinson. Is it because he's associated with YT easy listening and YT folk love to play his songs? Is it because he's gay? But Luther was gay and folks loved him. Fun fact, Johnny started out as a jazz and traditional gospel singer in the mid-50s and was rivals with Nat King Cole and also Johnny Nash (before Nash went the reggae route) and Johnny found massive success as a pop singer appearing on variety shows and became one of the best selling artists in history.

Did some folks think he was whitewashed or something? Because he mostly did duets with black women like Deniece Williams, Patti Austin, Dionne Warwick, Anita Baker, Gladys Knight, Regina Belle and Angela Bofill. I would have loved to hear him do a duet with Diana Ross, Marilyn McCoo and Whitney Houston.

With his four-octave range, he explored different styles with ease.

I don't think he's underrated at all with the much older crowd (75+). Just ask some of your older relatives or look in their record collections. You might be surprised.

idk... my mom loves him.
My grandma loves him too and I'm aware of older gen loves him too. But I just find it odd that younger gens seem to know more about Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr, Luther Vandross and Marvin Gaye than Johnny. Maybe because they had more scandalous lives while Johnny seems to be squeaky clean?

Yep never underrated Johnny Mathis was a BIG STAR back in the day and still tours. Hes 88. His music though to some is dated not to mention he was/is very quiet about his personal life and never put himself "out there".
