Mock Draft

In this mock draft simulation from the Utility Sports YouTube channel

https://youtu.be/krvVoGvw8w4?si=Yu0ZKQA9JvoTBXqo

  • Washington Wizards win the Draft Lottery and get the #1 overall pick

  • 1- Alex Sarr (PF/C)- Washington Wizards (Sarr without hesitation goes #1 overall to the Wizards; they get a big who can cover the 5 spot for them and pairs him up with Poole, Coulibaly, Deni and Kuzma; then their rebuild can truly begin)

  • 2- Zaccharie Risacher (SF)- Toronto Raptors (Raptors with the 2nd pick in this simulation take Risacher #2 overall; Risacher helps them out not just offensively bit defensively too; Ujiri wouldn't hesitate in taking a player of his size/length and Risacher would be a perfect fit next to RJ Barrett and Scottie Barnes and Jakob Poeltl giving them more size)

  • 3- Ron Holland (SF/PF)- Atlanta Hawks (Hawks in this simulation get 3rd overall and here they take Ron Holland; Holland would be a perfect fit next to Jalen Johnson and just think of the athleticism on top of what the Hawks already have in Trae Young and Dejounte Murray; this pick sells itself)

  • 4- Stephon Castle (PG/SG)- Charlotte Hornets (in this simulation they get 4th and go for fit as Castle would be a perfect fit next to LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller; LaMelo at the 1, Castle playing 2 guard and Miller playing small forward...Bridges moves over to power forward and Williams at the 5 you could be on to something special in Charlotte with new ownership group and new GM)

  • 5- Reed Sheppard (PG/SG)- Detroit Pistons (Sheppard in this mock goes 5th overall to Detroit; Sheppard would be a good fit especially next to Cade Cunningham and being added to their already young core...Sheppard would not only provide shooting but he would be able to space the floor and create for others but being a combo guard...easily he could play with Cade Cunningham but then you have Jaden Ivey which makes for a pretty dilemma but you have to go BPA)

  • 6- Matas Buzelis (SF)- Portland Trail Blazers (This pick also makes a lot of sense; Buzelis even though he's mocked as a small forward he really can play power forward as well but also for a guy his size if there was ever a perfect spot, a perfect situation for him to be in, it's Portland)

  • 7- Nikola Topic (PG)- San Antonio Spurs (It keeps happening and really can Spurs fans be all that surprised that Topic keeps getting mocked to this team? It is because he is a perfect player for what the Spurs are trying to build especially around Wemby...solves their point guard problem rather seamlessly)

  • 8- Donovan Clingan (C)- Memphis Grizzlies (Another perfect draft situation with Clingan going to a healthy Memphis next season with Ja, Smart, Bane and JJJ...Clingan easily plays center and JJJ can slot in at power forward...the Grizzlies will be back as a playoff team in no time)

  • 9- Rob Dillingham (PG)- Utah Jazz (Dillingham to Utah not only gives them another ball handler but someone who can not only create their own shot but someone who can be perfect on P & R with Lauri Markkanen & Walker Kessler)

  • 10- Dalton Knecht (SG/SF)- Houston Rockets via Brooklyn Nets (Knecht being a pure shooter, a marksman from 3 point range...this is huge if you're Houston

  • 11- Tidjane Salaun (SF/PF)- Chicago Bulls (In this simulation the Bulls go Salaun here and Salaun being a big for his size as a combo forward; people have compared him to a young Giannis when Giannis was first drafted; the potential the upside Salaun could have...if developed properly the Bulls could have a future steal here

  • 12- Cody Williams (SF)- OKC Thunder via Houston Rockets (In this mock simulation, Cody Williams joins his brother Jalen in OKC as the Williams brothers end up on the same team quite literally; Cody to the Thunder would be a huge steal especially if you have him come off their bench with their 2nd unit)

  • 13- Jared McCain (PG)- Sacramento Kings (Hometown boy gets drafted 13th overall to his native Kings; it's practically perfect with him being from Sacramento but also McCain even though he's listed as a point guard he can play shooting guard as well which is what the Kings need; McCain next to Fox...you have to love the fit)

  • 14- Kyle Filipowski (PF/C)- Portland Trail Blazers (Blazers go for more size with this pick as Filipowski in Portland he would basically give them another big but a big who can shoot on the perimeter and with his size & length especially defensively just imagine the fit)

  • 15- Isaiah Collier (PG)- Miami Heat (Heat Culture does it again; Collier to Miami is practically tailor made for this kid; put him in that culture with Jimmy, Bam, Herro and company with Spo as his coach 👌)

  • 16- Devin Carter (PG)- Philadelphia 76ers (Devin Carter to the 76ers gives them a guard who would be a perfect fit next to Tyrese Maxey; Carter is not only a hustle guy but he can playmake and also he can shoot)

  • 17- Kel'el Ware (C)- Los Angeles Lakers (Pelicans decide to defer the pick to next year basically giving the Lakers the 17th overall pick; Lakers here with this pick go big and take Ware 17th overall; Ware as another big body would be a good fit next to Anthony Davis; have AD slot over back to power forward and Ware at the 5 gives the Lakers size and defense but also athleticism)

  • 18- Ajay Mitchell (PG)- Orlando Magic (Magic at 18 in this simulation go with a guard who can not only create for others but can create for himself as well; Mitchell being a surprise pick at 18 would be an interesting fit especially next to Jalen Suggs)

  • 19- DaRon Holmes II (PF/C)- Toronto Raptors via Indiana Pacers (Toronto with their 2nd pick go big by taking Holmes 19th overall; Holmes can play 4 or 5 but he's listed as a center; Holmes is perfect for what you're trying to do especially if you keep Jakob Poeltl or you decide to move on from him; then Holmes is not only younger but on the defensive end he would be a terror so development wise it's a perfect pick)

  • 20- Ja'Kobe Walter (SG)- Cleveland Cavaliers (In this simulation Walter falls all the way to 20th overall to the Cavs; perfect situation for Walter to be in Cleveland especially if they move on from Donovan Mitchell; or if the Cavs keep Spida then Walter can just as easily play behind Mitchell by coming off the bench giving the Cavs shooting)

  • 21- Zach Edey (C)- New Orleans Pelicans (Edey in this mock draft simulation goes 21st overall to the Pelicans; perfect situation for Edey to go to especially because he can play behind JV at the 5 spot or if they move on from JV, Edey is your long term solution at center)

  • 22- Tristan Da Silva (SF/PF)- Phoenix Suns (In this simulation the Suns should go point guard but knowing the Suns they don't want to take the ball out of Booker's hands and their GM obviously doesn't know what he's doing; so they go Da Silva here with their pick)

  • 23- Tyler Smith (SF/PF)- Milwaukee Bucks (Bucks here go with Smith out of G League Ignite; Smith being a combo forward he can easily be developed and play behind Giannis/Middleton by coming off the bench)

  • 24- Justin Edwards (SG/SF)- New York Knicks via Dallas Mavericks (With this simulation pick the Knicks go Edwards here and with Edwards he would basically be coming off your bench anyway but he can be developed to play behind Donte and or OG)

  • 25- Carlton Carrington (PG)- New York Knicks (Back to back picks; Knicks with their own pick go Carrington here 25th overall and with Carrington being a point guard he would basically be playing behind Brunson in the lineup)

  • 26- Trentyn Flowers (SG/SF)- Washington Wizards via Los Angeles Clippers (Wizards in this simulation with their 2nd pick at 26th overall from the Clippers go Flowers here and Flowers basically would be bench depth)

  • 27- Ryan Dunn (SF)- Minnesota Timberwolves (Dunn to the Wolves would give them defense, defense, defense and not to mention a 3 & D guy it is perfect for what they already have going on in Minnesota with KAT, Ant Man, Gobert, etc.)

  • 28- Yves Missi (C)- Denver Nuggets (Steal here at 28 with Missi going to the Nuggets; even though Missi is a project; he is NBA ready for the most part but you obviously give the Nuggets more size at the 5 by drafting him; Missi would basically be playing behind Jokic anyway)

  • 29- Johnny Furphy (SF)- Utah Jazz (Jazz with their 2nd pick at 29th overall go Furphy and Furphy as a wing gives them more depth for what they lack)

  • 30- (Surprise pick)- Bronny James (the surprise of the draft; LeBron Jr gets drafted 30th overall in the 1st round as the last pick to the Boston Celtics; Bronny ends up in Boston and imagine if the Celtics pull this off but Bronny would most likely be coming off the bench; Celtics are trying to win now and what ensures that? Them drafting Bronny)

Topic doesn’t solve the Spurs issue which is shooting. The Spurs learned to play w Wemby by the end of the season what they really need is spacing from knockdown shooting.

The Spurs need a PG and Topic is European + you KNOW the SPURS and their heckin' EUROS :) That's about the level of depth in reasoning I see in mocks with him drafted by San Antonio. The team needs a ball handling, three level scorer that spaces the floor with perimeter shooting; not a ball dominant guard that struggles to create his own offence more than five feet from the basket. How a player that scores most of his baskets from the paint could possibly be a good fit for Wemby in their minds is beyond me. I stopped following and watching these videos because of how lazy and thoughtless many of these speculators are.

I’m glad other Spurs fans are seeing this. Plus people saying the spurs biggest need is a PG just doesn’t seem accurate. I’m sure we’ll upgrade at some point but Tre had a solid year and his shooting was much improved as the year went on. I’d argue the 3 is position we need to upgrade the most.

I personally DO think that depth at point is our most glaring need. I just think that the guard we acquire through the draft (or free agency) needs to complement our roster. Prospects like Rob Dillingham, Reed Sheppard, and Jarred MCcain are better fits than a guy who struggles from the perimeter. A player that's as ball dominant as Topic needs a roster built around his strengths; we already have "our guy". He may well be a great player in the NBA, just not for us.

P.S. Who do you like at the 3 in this draft? If the Toronto pick conveys, I'd love to see the front office take a gamble on a player like Kyshawn George form Miami. He's very raw, but he shot the ball @ 40% and has natural guard skills at 6'9. He's the sort of talent for our future that could provide perimeter scoring around Wemby.

We definitely need more depth. But I agree we don’t need for a classic ball dominant PG as much because I think Wemby is going to develop into a sort of point center ala Sabonis/jokic so I’d want to have good 3/D guards. McCain and Shep would be at the top of my list. Then for a 3 I’m still on board with Risacher, I think his slump has a lot to do with being a teenager playing 60 plus games against adults while also getting a ton of hype so folks key on him more but I see him being an above average shooter with great length. I think ideal draft day would be both picks convey and we take Risacher with either shep/mccain

Spurs have had multiple euro pg’s fail. DeColo, Udrih, etc.

A guard who can't shoot or defend does not solve anything for San Antonio.

So sick of seeing this as well.

I hope we get pick #3 or something and not #1 overall this year. It would suck to end up like the Pistons with a relatively mediocre #1 pick and then a bunch of 4 and 5 picks that add up to a pretty bad team after finally deciding to tank. I like Sarr but he doesn't seem like a guy you can build around. He probably tops out as a complementary player to a true star.

Edited

My hope is that the teams who arent looking for a defensive big are the ones who end up at the top of the draft,

I could see the Blazers, Pistons and Spurs all passing on Sarr if they land the top pick. Which would make drafting Sarr feel a little sweeter if we can pick him up at #2 or maybe even #3
