Original door handles to the house
Use Scotchbrite or steel wool and light oil / WD-40. Use paint remover to remove paint. Harsher methods will remove or damage the finish and you will have to paint.
I've tried cleaning it with mineral spirits, everything still looks faded and tarnished. I can't get the black off. I was thinking of walnut blasting it
That may be original finish, or tarnished brass plating. Look online for cleaning tarnished brass.
I think it is brass. I tried using brasso on it which is what I've used in the past for brass stuff but, it didn't seem to do anything
The black stripes are meant to be there. These are copper-plated steel door plates that were aged using an acid patina, called "japanning". You can get the paint off by soaking in a crock pot with soapy water for several hours. Immediately dry them, and put a coat of oil on them, or they'll flash rust.
