Almeida Theatre Reveals casting for The Years, Look Back in Anger & Roots

The Almeida Theatre in London has announced casting for three new productions, including Deborah Findlay, Romola Garai & Gina McKee.

The UK premiere of The Years, based on Les Années by Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux, and adapted and directed by Internationaal Theater Amsterdam’s new Artistic Director Eline Arbo, is playing at the Almeida from 27 July to 31 August 2024.

The cast includes Deborah Findlay (Orlando), Romola Garai (vigil), Gina McKee (Dear England), Anjli Mohindra (Noises Off) and Harmony Rose-Bremner (Hamnet).

In The Years, five different actors bring one woman’s personal and political story to life, set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing post-war Europe.

The creative team includes Music Supervisor and Sound Designer Thijs van Vuure, Set Designer Juul Dekker, Lighting Designer Varja Klosse, Costume Designer Rebekka Wörmann, and Casting Director Amy Ball CDG. The play has an English version by Stephanie Bain.

The original production and adaptation of The Years was first produced as De jaren by Het Nationale Theater in The Hague, Netherlands in 2022.

Casting has also been announced for the Almeida’s season Angry and Young, featuring a double-bill of Roots by Arnold Wesker and Look Back in Anger by John Osborne.

The two plays, which held a mirror up to 1950’s society, are running alongside each other in repertory for 13 weeks, from 10 September to 23 November 2024.

Directed by Diyan Zora (Tom Fool; Klippies), the revival of Roots stars Morfydd Clark (Saint Maud) as Beatie, Iwan Davies (Backstairs Billy) as Mr Healey, Billy Howle (Dear Octopus) as Frankie and Ellora Torchia (The Split) as Pearl, with further casting to be announced.

Arnold Wesker’s lyrical, impassioned play is about a young woman’s journey to self-discovery.

Look Back in Anger is directed by former Almeida Resident Director Atri Banerjee (The Glass Menagerie) and stars Morfydd Clark as Helena, Iwan Davies as Cliff, Billy Howle as Jimmy and Ellora Torchia as Alison, with further casting to be announced.

John Osborne’s ground-breaking, furious play changed British theatre forever when it was first produced at the Royal Court in 1956.

Coming up at the Almeida Theatre is Alma Mater starring Lia Williams, from 11 June 2024.
