Staying in University accommodation during vacations

Updated on: 24 April 2024

Understand whether you can stay in your University accommodation during vacations.

Undergraduate students

If you want to stay in University accommodation over the summer, complete the summer accommodation application form, from early April. You will be assigned a room in a different hall if accommodation is not available in your current hall.

Whether you can stay in your accommodation during the Christmas and February vacations depends on your residence and if your accommodation is self-catered or catered.

Self-catered

In most cases your contract includes accommodation during the Christmas and February vacations.

This applies to:

  • Fife Park
  • Agnes Blackadder Hall
  • David Russell Apartments
  • Whitehorn Hall
  • Powell Hall

This does not apply if your contract is self-catered and you live in Gannochy House.

If you leave your accommodation during a vacation, you should tell the Residence Management team.

Catered (except David Russell Apartments, Agnes Blackadder Hall, Whitehorn Hall)

If your accommodation contract is catered, it includes accommodation during the February vacation (on a self-catered basis), but not the Christmas vacation. This means you must leave your accommodation during the festive period. You will get an email with your moving-out and return dates.

This applies to:

  • John Burnet Hall
  • McIntosh Hall
  • St Regulus Hall
  • St Salvator’s Hall
  • University Hall
  • Andrew Melville Hall

Accommodation in Gannochy House is not available during the Christmas vacation and the intersemester break, but you will not have to remove your belongings from your room. Dates will be in your accommodation contract.

You should leave your room tidy and surfaces clear for cleaning. Sometimes the University will perform maintenance work during the Christmas vacation. If your room is affected by this, you will be told beforehand.

Catered: David Russell Apartments, Agnes Blackadder Hall, Whitehorn Hall

If your accommodation contract is catered and you live in David Russell Apartments, Agnes Blackadder Hall or Whitehorn Hall, it includes accommodation during both vacations, on a self-catered basis.

Postgraduate students

Your accommodation contract will always cover the Christmas and spring vacations. In most cases your accommodation will be for 50 weeks, ending in late August.

If your accommodation is not available for the summer period, this will be stated on your accommodation contract. If you want to stay in University accommodation over the summer, complete the summer accommodation application form as early as you can in April.
