Deepika Padukone is one of the biggest female superstars in the Indian film industry right now. And it looks like she is garnering global acclaim, too. The actor, who was seen in Fighter earlier this year, has been featured on the list of Global Disruptors 2024 by Deadline Hollywood magazine. Deepika joins several international celebrities such as Eva Longoria, Uma Thurman, and Lee Sung Jin, among others. The list features celebrities who are significantly contributing to defining the future of the entertainment industry globally.

In the feature, Deepika is introduced as ‘India’s surprise superstar who is on a mission to break boundaries and taboos’. The report also notes that Deepika has not just delivered box office success for two consecutive years, but has also represented India on several global platforms. Deepika said, “Of course the success of a movie is important, and the box office is important, and the awards and accolades are important, but for me, as a person, the time I’ve had with people and the experiences I have on the set of a film are the most important.”
The soon-to-be mom revisited her journey, and also expresses gratitude for her debut film, 2007’s Om Shanti Om. She said, “When I think back, I think of myself as so young and naïve and lost but at the same time, I felt so protected and I really couldn’t have asked for a better debut, because they protected me and they didn’t need to. They made sure that I emoted well, that I said my dialogue well, and made me feel included and comfortable. And then when we started promoting the movie, they really propped me up and put me out there and my life changed overnight.”

While Deepika has represented India at the Oscars, and the BAFTAs, she also served as a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival and featured as a cover star for TIME magazine. Other than this, she also was the first Indian to unveil the FIFA World Cup trophy. On the film front, Deepika made her Hollywood debut with xXx: Return Of Xander Cage in 2017. Talking about her acting journey in Hollywood, Deepika told the magazine, “About a decade ago, when I started my journey in the West auditioning, it was a really new process for me because I’d never had to audition. I wasn’t a trained actor, and I never went to a fancy acting school-everything that I’ve learned has been on the job. The systems are so different between Hollywood and Bollywood.”
Deepika further talked about “Naatu Naatu” winning an Oscar and creating history in India. She said, “I think the world has become smaller, and the world has come together and it’s really about telling great stories. I don’t think we’ve drastically changed anything in India about the way that we work or the kinds of stories that we tell. I think we’ve always had interesting stories to tell, but I do think that what has changed is that the world has opened up to the idea of the East and to India in particular, and I think that’s the change – realizing there is a world outside of America.”
Last year, on Koffee with Karan, Deepika opened up about her battle with anxiety and depression, and reiterated that it’s important to not view mental illness as a taboo subject.
