Thirty-seven countries have performed, but only twenty-six have made it to the grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. Tonight in Malmö they’ll sing-it-out in the winner-takes-all extravaganza. So, as the contestants slip into their tightest pants and as producers warm up the wind machine, we thought we’d gather some notes on the proceedings so you know what to expect tonight (in case you haven’t been paying attention for the past three months). Consider this our pre-recorded commentary.

Eurovision 2024 live discussion: Grand final running order
1. 🇸🇪 Sweden: Marcus & Martinus — “Unforgettable”
An “Unforgettable” woman “who comes alive at night” is both toxic and venomous. So much so that she keeps two Norwegian twins thirsty as they dance in a Tokyo-by-night cityscape potentially inspired by The Matrix. We can safely assume she’s into twins.
Memorable lyrics: “She gon’ chew you up, and leave you empty, hollow, then she’ll spit you out.”
2. 🇺🇦 Ukraine: Jerry Heil & alyona alyona — “Teresa & Maria”
Two of Ukraine’s best-known singers remind us that all saints were born as human beings and it’s up to us to choose our path. alyona alyona, perhaps Ukraine’s most famous female rapper, wears armour to channels centuries of strong Ukrainian women — and pulls a small sword from her hair bun to remind the world Ukrainians defend their homeland. The shadows, she tells us, represent her countrymen who are no longer with us. She thinks of them every day as she strives to more toward the saintly. The final shot portrays some of Ukraine’s most famous women — including Nobel Prize winners and activists. It’s a reminder that Ukraine exists and will continue to do so.
Memorable lyrics: “Mother Teresa and Virgin Mary are with us Barefoot, as if on a blade, they walked on the ground”
3. 🇩🇪 Germany: Isaak — “Always on the Run”
There is so much fire in this act you may smell gasoline through the televsion set. Isaak sings about constantly running from the demons that stalk him, rather than confronting them head on. Since he’s always on the move, he’s unable to put out the fire that’s quite literally burning his house down. But he eventually realises that rather than running from those voices he should confront them directly: “Get out of my head, I’m so sick and tired, can’t do this anymore.” And just like that the fire goes out. Some have suggested the couch is giving “therapy.” No shame in that.
Memorable lyrics: “All I do is keep my head up, but it’s hard to keep the pace, like I’m haunted by the voices deep within.”
4. 🇱🇺 Luxembourg: Tali — “Fighter”
Last summer Tali was working three jobs in New York City and struggling to pay rent. Fast forward to Malmö and she’s giving us her take on Wakanda Forever as she fights the haters and inner demons to believe in herself. As she unleashes her inner beast, we see her in warrior couture dancing as digital jaguars appear on the LED and as augmented reality crawling out of your TV. The lyrics reads as autobiographical. “You’re over 20 years old, you don’t have more time to act like a child or have fun.”
Memorable lyrics: “Rush to your destiny, you don’t have to brake.”
5. 🇳🇱 Netherlands: Joost Klein — “Europapa”
Update: As we’ve been reporting all day, Joost Klein has been disqualified from the contest after allegedly leering at a photographer. The Dutch broadcaster has said this penalty does not match the crime.
Largely autobiographical, “Europapa” is a tribute from Joost to his parents, who he lost when he was still a child. His father instilled in him a belief in “a world without borders.” So we see Joost moving between countries — note the currywurst on the screen, and the references to escargot and fish ‘n chips — and wearing European Union blue in honour of borderless travel. The performance ends with a touching spoken word segment (with English subtitles) in which Joost explicitly pays tribute to his father. Tissues at the ready.
Memorable lyrics: “I miss you every day is what I whisper to myself. You see, dad, I did listen to you.”
6. 🇮🇱 Israel: Eden Golan with “Hurricane”
Twenty-year-old Eden’s original song “October Rain” was disqualified for being too political — the title was widely assumed to refer to the October 7th attacks. But after a bit of re-working the EBU permitted her to participate with “Hurricane,” which carries a message of perseverance that could apply to any number of situations. Eden sings about being broken by a hurricane and trying to rebuild. She does this inside of a giant ring or circle. It could represent the never-ending cycle of life and death or perhaps the endless cycle of conflict in the world. Some online have suggested it is a physical representation of the tunnels where hostages have been kept in Gaza. This entry faced massive jeering and boos during the dress rehearsals and jury final. Producers have attempted to cover this up by layering applause over it on the TV output, so you may not hear it at home.
Memorable lyrics: “Hours and hours, empowers, life is no game, but it’s ours.”
7. 🇱🇹 Lithuania: Silvester Belt — “Luktelk”
One of the biggest bangers in this year’s contest comes from Silvester Belt. It’s dark and edgy and has an “of the night” feel. Translating to “Waiting,” the song is about being stuck in limbo between simply being alive and actually living. “In the song I’m saying, ‘I don’t want to dance, but I have to dance,” he told us. “Wait, dance through it and eventually it will fade away. That’s my message.”
Memorable lyrics: “One night has passed, and then another. But just like always, I’m the same again.”
8. 🇪🇸 Spain: Nebulossa — “Zorra”
The word “zorra” literally means “vixen” (a female fox). However, it’s most often translated as “bitch”…while the male version of the noun, “zorro”, is used to refer to someone who’s astute. It’s among the most blatant cases of built-in sexism in the Spanish language. The lead singer Meri, who is over 50, reappropriates the word and turns it into a badge of honour — something to sing about. “I already know I’m the black sheep, the misunderstood one, the stone-cold one,” she sings. “But this is my nature, I can’t be bothered to change for you.” To celebrate she dances alongside two male dancers in assless chaps.
Memorable lyrics: “If I go out alone, I’m a bitch; if I have fun, I’m the biggest bitch; if I come home after dawn, I’m even more of a bitch”.
9. 🇪🇪 Estonia: 5MIINUUST x PUULUUP — “(nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi”
The group 5Miinust & Puuluup are coming with a mouthful. And by that we mean a very wordy song title: “(nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi”, which translates as “We (really) don’t know anything about (these) drugs”. That’s the longest song title in the history of Eurovision. There are various theories on what the entry actually means, but Estonian fans say the band have been caught by the police with certain illegal substances, which they deny. This song shows them denying culpability as a cop plays the traditional talharpa. He’s giving protect-and-serve along with some Big Daddy Energy.
Memorable lyrics: “I don’t know drugs, I know soda and cider. I can’t tell the difference between vitamins and speed.”
10. 🇮🇪 Ireland: Bambie Thug — “Doomsday Blue”
Bambie Thug — who describes themselves as a “non-binary witch” — delivers a powerful message with “Doomsday Blue”: “Never let anyone make you feel like you’re less than you are.” Their stage show is a horror film in three minutes with deathly screams, incantations performed in a pentagram with candles, and a half naked warlock who may be battling a hex from his ex. The performance makes Finland’s iconic Lordi look vanilla in comparison. Toward the end of the song Bambie rips off their costume to reveal a leotard in the colours of the transgender flag.
Memorable lyrics: “Avada Kadavra, I speak to destroy, the feelings I have I cannot avoid.”
11. 🇱🇻 Latvia: Dons — “Hollow”
Latvia’s most popular singer deals with the related themes of entrapment and hard-earned freedom. Speaking ahead of the show he told us “Hollow” can refer to that feeling of being numb and lacking agency. “In our lives there are moments where you feel like a hostage to your own insecurities, demons, inner feelings, relationships, and views,” he says. “There’s so many truths and so many opinions about how you have to live your life instead of your own.” He captures this on stage with a giant ring, which seems to symbolise a portal between

12. 🇬🇷 Greece: Marina Satti — “Zari”
The stage show for “Zari” — that’s “Dice” in Greek — is filmed with a single camera shot. It sort of resembles a performance you might see at the MTV EMAs. Marina walks through the stage with her dancers (“my friends,” she has said repeatedly in interviews) and they dance to Greek rhythms and sounds — at one point pausing to pull white handerkchiefs from their boots. The song includes a delicious Greek dance break. Marina says she wants to move past stereotypes — the feta, the Acropolis, the tzatziki — and showcase youth culture in her country.
Memorable lyrics: “Where will the wind take us? I fall and roll like dice.”
13. 🇬🇧 United Kingdom Olly Alexander — “Dizzy”
If you have young children, this is when you put them to bed. Depending on who you are, the stage show for “Dizzy” is raw or downright raunchy. Olly performs in a box — meant to resemble the shower and changing rooms at a gym — and dances alongside four boxers in tiny red shorts. At times they appear to be upside down. At times they writhe and mimic sexual positions. It could be considered art. But it could also be considered softcore porn depending on your tolerance for flesh. Regardless, it’s a visual feast that is very well executed. Some viewers may find that the repeated upside down shots induce actual dizziness.
Memorable lyrics: “There isn’t an end, there isn’t a start, I don’t wanna stop, I can’t go too far.”
14. 🇳🇴 Norway: Gåte — “Ulveham”
Norway’s most popular folk-metal band (yes, that’s a genre) take old Norse legends and set them to music. “Ulveham” tells the story of an evil stepmother who turns her new charge into a wolf. The only way for the girl to become human again is to drink her brother’s blood. The drama comes through loud and clear as the lead singer belches it out from a revolving platform. Dramatic LEDs of crashing waves create one of the most dramatic performances of the year. The lead singer Gunnhild often says that performing the song is like giving birth. But the wailing you’ll hear isn’t actually about delivering a child. She performs kvede, a traditional style of singing inspired by goat herding.
Memorable lyrics: “Before I hаd drunk of my brother’ѕ blood.”
15. 🇮🇹 Italy: Angelina Mango — “La noia”
Angelina Mango dances for freedom and sisterhood. “La noia” — that literally translates as “Boredom” — is all about breaking free from people’s expectations through the rhythm and sound of the Cumbia. Our girl isn’t here for domesticity: “Princess, they call you princess, so stop doing the dishes now,” she sings. Rules and demands also flow from the music industry, where people are always hungry to get a bigger piece of her pie: “Business, they talk about business, meanwhile, I close my eyes while I sign contracts.”
Memorable lyrics: “My necklace doesn’t have pearls of wisdom, I was given colored beads, for the little girls messed up with trauma to untangle slowly with age.”
16. 🇷🇸 Serbia: Teya Dora — “Ramonda”
Teya Dora sings about the “Ramonda” — a rare and delicate flower that comes back to life with only a few drops of water. In Serbia, which lost one-third of its population during World War I, the flower represents resilience and how the country rebuilt itself following the war. Speaking to us ahead of the show, Teya Dora said: “It represents hope for me and that even when the days are dark and even if you feel like there’s nothing, if you have hope and if you trust in yourself, you can find a way out.”
Memorable lyrics: “The world is on fire, every flower too.”
17. 🇫🇮 Finland: Windows95man — “No Rules”
The only rule for Windows95man is that there are no rules. The denim-wearing DJ argues that life is best lived on your own terms. To convey that we see him being born in a giant denim egg, running around stage in nude illusion underwear, and, at the climax of the song, shooting sparks from his hips. This is the definition of wackadoodle and bizarre. And that’s precisely why so many people love it.
Memorable lyrics: “Is there something wrong with the way I look? Is there something wrong with who I am? If I’m not alright, tell me why do I feel so beautiful tonight.”
18. 🇵🇹 Portugal: iolanda — “Grito”
“Grito” translates to English as “scream,” which Iolanda says is all about “self-defence and trusting in yourself.” To do that you have to battle demons and inner emotions, who she represents on stage with masked dancers in white. When she reaches her biggest scream — you’ll feel it — those dancers fade away. iolanda is letting go of pain and moving toward freedom.
Memorable lyrics: “I’m a flame that still burns.”
19. 🇦🇲 Armenia: LADANIVA — “Jako”
The song is a message from Jako to herself and to all little Jakos in the world. She wants them to be true to their “real, wild, unapologetic selves” and to find their true calling – just like she did through her art. Throughout the lyrics of the opening verse, she reveals that when she was younger, she was told to not talk too much but not to stay too quiet either. She was told what to wear and how to behave. But those days are gone. She’s evolved and you better pay attention: “I am a free girl, so I will dance and you will watch!” Those punchy words lead to an upbeat chorus, which is light on lyrics but heavy on the energy. “Come on, come on, come on, please. Get up, dance!” When others talk, it’s time to dance. By moving your body you can move yourself forward — it’s the Jako way.
Memorable lyrics: “La la lai lai lai la la la la.”
20. 🇨🇾 Cyprus: Silia Kapsis — “Liar”
Although the title suggests Silia is singing about a person, she says she’s actually talking about oppression more generally. Social media, she says, feeds us lies — about how we should look and live — whether that’s related to body image or our sexual identity. She does this with four male dancers who strip off their shirts in the final seconds — a statement of freedom and showing your true self. The hip-hop choreography includes a memorable dance break where Silia freestyles with the best of them.
Memorable lyrics: “Should’ve known you’re a trouble maker, but you act too nice to hate.”
21. 🇨🇭 Switzerland: Nemo — “The Code”
The non-binary artist Nemo hopes to inspire people — particularly the LGBTQ+ community — to live authentically. Their in-your-face, full-throttle entry snakes through rap, drum ‘n bass and opera. It’s fun and unconventional — but it carries an important message about self-acceptance and showcases the perseverance many people need to live openly and freely. For Nemo, cracking the titular code reflects the journey of learning they were neither male nor female. As they sing: “I, I went to hell and back/ to find myself on track/ I broke the code/ Oh, Oh, Oh…” Using binary code as an analogy for black and white, male and female, Nemo unlocks their truth: “Somewhere between the 0’s and 1’s/ that’s where I found my kingdom come/ my heart beats like a drum.” On stage they do all of this on a revolving platform that resembles a satellite dish.
Memorable lyrics: “I got so much on my mind and I been awake all night, I’m so pumped, I’m so psyched.”
22. 🇸🇮 Slovenia: Raiven — “Veronika”
The song is based on Veronika Deseniška (or, Veronika of Desenice) a well-known figure in Slovenian history and folklore. She was the first woman in Slovenia to be tried (wrongly) for witchcraft — and she remains a symbol of the ways women are persecuted. Raiven describes her song as ‘the symphony of the Sirens’ and draws upon not only Veronika’s supposed witchcraft, but the stories of several legendary female figures from across history. As Raiven embodies a tortured Raiven, her dancers look like naked little flames around her at the stake. But in reality they represent her children. They’re warriors who fight for her freedom.
Memorable lyrics: “I surrender to the light.”
23. 🇭🇷 Croatia: Baby Lasagna — “Rim Tim Tagi Dim”
First things first: the title “Rim Tim Tagi Dim” does not have a Croatian translation. “It means nothing actually,” Baby Lasgna told us. “The first sample that you hear in the song goes like rim tim tagi dim, rim tim tagi dim. I was like, ‘It would be funny if I put some real vocals with rim tim tagi dim. There is no great origin story. It’s just a guy in his room and the riff sounds like rim tim tagi dim.”
The real meaning comes not in the title, but in the verses that capture a national dilemma. The European Union has described Croatia as a country of emigration: more people are leaving the country than are arriving from outside its borders. The song explores this mass exodus of young people — and the effects it has on those leaving and those they leave behind. Marko sings of a young man leaving his village in pursuit of a better life. It’s not an easy decision to take. His desperate plea to his cat — please meow back — captures the sadness of saying goodbye.
Memorable lyrics: “I hope I find peace in the noise, wanna become one of those city boys.”
24. 🇬🇪 Georgia: Nutsa — “Firefighter”
The world is on fire and Nutsa wants to stop the burn. “I have experienced a lot of judgmental comments about me, a lot of hate, a lot of negativity. Since I was a kid I was fighting this negativity with love always. So that’s why I’m saying in this song that we have to put out the fire. Fire represents all this negativity that is going on in the world right now. I’m trying to save this love and I am actually putting out the fire with love.” She also puts it out with an iconic dance move that sees her on all four popping her back as the stage burns. You’ll need sunglasses for this one.
Memorable lyrics: “The ceiling is falling, the windows are burning, it’s getting harder to breathe.”
25. 🇫🇷 France: Slimane — “Mon Amour”
“My performance will be like a romantic rendez-vous.” That’s how France’s Slimane describes his staging for “Mon Amour.” The dominant colour here is white — white clothing, white lights from the audience, white smoke that billows around Slimane as if he’s in the heavens. The “Eurovision winning” moment comes when Slimane, filmed from the side, backs away from the microphone stand and belts it out a cappella from some distance. The audience loses it every time.
Memorable lyrics: “Oh my love, please come back to Paris, do it for us, I am begging you.”
26. 🇦🇹 Austria: Kaleen — “We Will Rave”
Kaleen — a four-time world champion dancer — brings 90s euro-dance back to life with this dance banger about seeking solace at the club. As she said ahead of Eurovision: “‘We Will Rave‘ is about needing a place of refuge when your heart is broken, and finding it in music. The rave is where the outsiders and wounded souls go to heal and dissolve their problems through music. It’s the sea of rhythm that washes the pain away and gives us salvation.” She does all of that beneath a giant diamond decorated with Swarovski crystals. Our girl is expensive.
Memorable lyrics: “When the darkness hits and we can’t be saved, we rum de dum dum da – we will rave.”

I loved Norway and voted for it. One of the best Norwegian entries ever for me.
However, everyone I knew (not eurofans) said it was loud and dark and did not like it much so I can understand why it flopped.
What surprised me is the so low score by juries, too.

Sometimes. But just sometimes. To tank Norway , not giving enough appreciation to the likes of France, Slovenia for example is a crime. And some countries had one , one(!) jury person, it’s just not right…,

It is one of the best ballads in recent years and definitely one of the best Israeli entries ever. And kudos to Eden Golan, poor girl, she has the weight of the world on her shoulders but she delivered.

So, for those who love conspiracy theories, EBU plotted behind the scenes so that Salvador wins by such a high margin and steal the win from the other contestants.

However in 2017 there were 42 countries, this year there were 37. So speaking in percentage Nemo had higher percentage than Salvador.
Technically, Croatia’s loss wasn’t entirely related with Switzerland being the clear jury favorite. I would say it lost mostly because the televotes wen’t utterly political towards Israel’s side, so much that if thst wouldn’t happen, the result would be more unpredictable.
Then again, I just realised I contradicted myself because the juries decided the winner (for the second year in a row) from the start.
Either way, I’m happy. Happy that a good song won (FINALLY), happy that Baby Lasagna scored Croatia’s highest ever position in the contest and happy that Estonia didn’t finish last, lol (screw you, juries).

I also felt that Switzerland would win the jury vote by landslide and then get enough votes from televote to win. Although I have to admit it was nerve – wrecking!

The UK performance was also rather cheap and mediocre. Safe song with a very controversial performance.

Österdahl couldn’t organize the good show with all that drama that came before. Demonstations, Quaran burning on Thursday , Netherlands drama etc etc.
The UK performance was not for everyone but it definitely didn’t deserve 0 points AND the way it was announced (camera straight to the face of Ollie) those moments…
As for the UK, the only consolation here is they did not receive 0 points overall (similar with 2021), and they did not finish in the bottom 5 as everyone here predicted. 13th in the juries and 18th overall
So once again the juries picked the winner. The result is realistically decided before the grand final. I liked the Swiss entry but the balance is wrong

The world has way bigger problems than plotting against Croatia so they don’t win the contest.
Frankly, I didn’t get my winner since 2018 and with all the circumstances revolving this edition (in addition to the results, Lithuania and Norway, my two favourites), I’m taking a break from this show at least for a few years. Nevertheless, Switzerland, thank you for saving the contest from I$rahell, good luck. 🙂

Sadly this year was a bad year of music. There were maybe three entries that could be called good songs with melodies or lyrics worth mentionning.
Then you have the usual rip off. The Stromae one was glaring, too bad it’s the one who won ^^ Like Mans winning with a rip off David Guetta.

bye overrated Croatia, thank God but still jury vote should be redone with not rigged juries. When public give more than 300 points to a country and jury only 50 there is an enormois abnormality and biased. EBU do something it’s your job, fine this n a last letter of alphabet i juries.
Thank you for pointing this out. Swiss was a fine song, but not overwhelmingly exceptional—as the weirdly consistent jury votes would seem to say. No way that all those diverse countries should have been so uniform in their #1 pick.
