Stanley Kubrick’s comedy has been frequently imitated but never surpassed as a dark cinematic satire and a witty depiction of Cold War tensions. Peter Sellers received a Best Actor nomination for his hilarious performance in three roles—the hapless US President Merkin Muffley, the well-meaning Royal Air Force officer Lionel Mandrake, and the sinister scientist Dr. Strangelove. Also nominated for Best Picture, Directing, and Adapted Screenplay, the film benefits from the stark black-and-white cinematography of Gilbert Taylor (Star Wars) and the iconic production design of two-time Oscar winner Ken Adam, whose War Room was described by Steven Spielberg as “the best movie set ever built.”
