How large will Dubai’s new airport be compared to its current one?

This week, the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates announced plans to construct a new airport that will become the largest in the world with up to 3 times its current capacity for travelers and air traffic. The proposed redevelopment will make the Al Maktoum International Airport 5 times larger with 400 gates, 5 separate runways, and able to service up to 260 million passengers a year compared to last year’s total of 86.9 million; the second highest in the world behind Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, USA. The project is set to be finished in 10 years and cost upwards of $35 billion USD and is the largest objective of a major redevelopment plan Dubai’s leadership proposed in efforts to increase the city’s economy by 2033.
