Buckingham Palace has confirmed that His Majesty The King is to retain his Patronage of the Royal Institution (Ri), following a review of over 1000 patronages held by The late Queen, The former Prince of Wales and The former Duchess of Cornwall.

As The former Prince of Wales, His Majesty first became the Ri’s Royal Patron in 2016 following 64 years of Royal Patronage by The late Queen. An independent charity, the Ri received its Royal Charter in 1801.

Welcoming the Palace’s announcement, Chair of Trustees at the Royal Institution Sir Richard Catlow, said: "His Majesty has a long association with the Royal Institution, having accompanied his mother, The late Queen, in our Theatre on a number of occasions, and subsequently as our Royal Patron since 2016.

“So we are delighted that His Majesty has chosen to retain Patronage of the Ri, supporting our mission to bring scientists and the public together, to share their interest and passion for science."
