DES MOINES, Iowa- Funky Finds Vintage & Retro in Downtown Des Moines recently caught Hollywood’s attention.

Crew members for the Netflix original “Unfrosted” visited the local shop two years ago looking for costumes and props. The movie showcased the creation of the pop tart and took place in the 1960s.

Pieces found in Funky Finds were used to style four actors: Jon Hamm, Jerry Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy, and Amy Schumer.

“They filled uptheir car, took them out to L.A., and they were so impressed with the quality of our vintage clothing that they came back again. So, they were here twice, they bought thousands of dollars worth of vintage clothing. It’s been wonderful for our consignors, but it’s been wonderful to have vintage clothes have a new life again,” said owner Suzie Fredgill.

Cindy Theophilus is one of the consignors whose pieces were used on the big screen, but she loved more than seeing her clothing.

“I really enjoyed it, because I was born in 1960 so everything they talked about I totally related to, especially pop tarts. I have some pop tarts at my house right now,” said Cindy.

She is a self-described “picker.” Her hobby is to go to thrift stores and tag sales and look for authentic items from the 1940s to 1970s, which she later cosigns at Funky Finds. The shop has sold hundreds of her items so far, but this isn’t the first time celebrities have worn her pieces.

Funky Finds attracts customers from all over, but there are some frequent visitors who love the vintage and retro era. Brenda Frye is one of them. She said she love the movie because of the fashion.

“I will watch the movie for the clothes and then will go back and figure out what’s going on because I just get sucked into the styles and the decades.”

And while this isn’t the first time that celebrities have worn items from Funky Finds, Suzie says she continues her 12 year legacy for other reasons.

“I love people. And I love the joy that they get, and the happy memories that they share when they go through the shop. People laughing because their mom had an item, or crying because their grandma had a table. But, all of this elicits a happy memory for people,” said Suzie.
