Update the 2018 Intel Mac mini to newer OS?
I have my 2018 i7 Mac mini on Mac OS Catalina. I didn’t like the new icons and settings app of Big Sur, so I never to this day updated it. Now I think about it, should I update it? I check on updates regularly, I always update Catalina when a security patch comes along.
What am I missing out on when I don’t update? I know security risks ofc. But I’m not so concerned as I don’t browse sketchy websites or so.
The last Catalina security patch was 2022. You no longer get security updates.
The most high profile iPhone security exploits involved sending you a malicious iMessage. So you don’t need to actively do anything besides receive an iMessage.
Lots of exploits related to malicious image files.
Good thing I am pretty sure I have iMessages turned off.
yes
You do know Apple stopped issuing security patches for Catalina 2 years ago, right?
What are you missing by not updating to a newer OS? Security updates are one thing you are missing out on.
I'm still rocking Mojave. Too many compatibility issues after that, though, yeah I am running into different compatibility issues after that. So I may have to go to Catalina. After that I'm going to at least need an icon pack but let's face it, they have all been a mess for a while.
When we do Internet MacOs install Apple decides what version can run on the Mac.
To beat the bookie:
Backup to Time Machine(TM) if you can and do manual data backup in case TM doesn't work
Run in terminal(Catalina 10.15 and later):
softwareupdate --list-full-installers

Choose version you want
Create bootable MacOs INSTALLER USB.

I suggest you upgrade
Works fine from on the latest OS on the 2018 i5.
Yeah, you should. If you don’t want to go to Somoma, do at least Monterey
That mini should be upgradeable to the latest version which is Sonoma. Goto the App Store and search for it. It should let you update. The next OS may not accept that device
