The festival of dance and music introduces the Flint community to traditional Mexican culture.

FLINT, Mich. (WJRT)- The University of Michigan Flint played host to the 2024 Folklórico Festival this weekend.

Run by non-profit El Ballet Folklórico Estudiantil, it introduces participants to Mexican dance and music.

On Saturday, participants learned how to perform those dances during an afternoon seminar, followed by a workshop that taught them how create the corresponding traditional costumes.

"The whole idea behind this entire workshop is help preserve Hispanic culture, keeping dances authentic, and ensuring the community passes these traditions along," said dancer and musician Alphonse Buclay.

He added that he's excited to see all the dancers come together and the he's glad there's a chance for the community to celebrate Mexican art and culture in this way.

The festival concludes with a performance at 2:00 P.M. at U of M Flint's FWT Library dance theater.
