Coronation Street viewers were in disbelief as the credits rolled on tonight's episode.

Friday's edition continued to explore the saga of Lauren Bolton's disappearance. Bethany Platt was convinced her abuser, Nathan Curtis, was involved in the incident and confronted him earlier this week.

Nathan was later attacked and had to be taken to hospital with his injuries. It was revealed in tonight's episode that Gary Windass was the attacker and Nathan planned to press charges.

However, Sarah Platt went to the hospital and bribed Nathan to drop the charges. She then concocted a plan with Gary to make sure that Nathan leaves the Cobbles so Bethany can get on with her life.

Bethany confronted her onscreen mum about what had happened and the two erupted into a fierce row. The episode ended in dramatic fashion as Sarah slapped Bethany.

Viewers following the show on X were taken aback by the scene and claimed there should have been a warning for violence issued before the episode.

Matt said: "Can't believe Sarah just slapped Bethany!!"

@Ilovelucyfallon added: "NOOOOOOOOO I can’t believe Sarah just hit Bethany!!!!!!!!!"

Jonty commented: "How come there wasn’t a warning about violence? That slap"
