4 days in Switzerland… how’s this plan look?

Land in Zurich and staying there from June 15-19 (flying to Rome). Flying from Tampa FL. Staying at the Romantik Seehotel Somme

June 15 - land at Noon local time. Relax at hotel on lake

June 16 - open…maybe a chocolate factory tour in Zurich & some city stuff…but may do some lake/hotel stuff too.

June 17 - going to Pilatus/Lucerne

June 18 - Stoos

June 19 - fly to Rome

Me, wife and two kids (20 & 17).

Question 1: wish we had more time, but we do not. Should we do something different on the 16th?

Question 2: can someone please explain how we get to Stoos? I can’t figure it out.

Many many thanks.

Romantik Seehotel Sonne (like "Sun") is in Küsnacht, a Zurich suburb. Küsnacht can be reached by direct trains from Zurich airport. If weather is fine, consider a short lake tour, even to Zurich from Küsnacht. Check ZVV (Zurich regional public transport) for tickets and travel passes in the area (cover also lake and river boat trips)

Finalise the other day trip plans only once having somehow reliable weather forecast.

Timetable apps or websites work also for Küsnacht to Stoos - fastest routes take over 2 hours, slightly longer, nicer route is via Rapperswil SG for VorAlpen-Express train to Arth-Goldau. But Stoos itself is really not interesting (aside the funicular up to Stoos), best is scenery above Stoos, Fronalpstock reachable from Stoos by chair-lifts, starting point also for the ridge hike to Klingenstock.

Thank you. When I wrote Stoos, I meant the ridge hike from Klingstock to Fronalpstock.

Whilst the hotel you have chosen is no doubt very nice, you have picked the wrong side of the Zurichsee for swift public transport connections to Luzern and the Schwyz / Stoos area. Directly opposite your hotel you will be able to see trains rushing backwards and forwards along the opposite lake shore on the main line railway between Zurich and Luzern / Chur!

Congratulations on booking one of the best small hotels in Zurich Canton. : )

I'm biased, because Hotel Sonne is less than 10mins walk from where I live, and I walk past it every time I go shopping in the village. In the height of summer and winter, Hotel Sonne is the hub of village activity due to the lake front beer garden, which is transformed into an ice rink in Winter.

You're also only a couple of minutes walk from Kusnacht ZH train station via an underpass at the side of the hotel, giving you direct access into the city centre every 15mins. It only takes 10mins to Zurich Stadelhofen (my preferred station) and 13mins to Zurich HB. You also have branches of Coop, Migros and Avec supermarkets in the village centre, plus a small number of bars and restaurants.

Küsnacht is a village in it's own right, rather than a suburb of Zurich, with a pretty village centre, and is on the Gold Coast, so benefits from views of the opposite coast lit up by the morning light, and glorious sunsets over the lake, whilst the opposite Silver Coast, is in near darkness. We very deliberately chose to live in Kusnacht for the quality of light.

If you decide to visit the Lindt Museum, the Kusnacht boat jetty is directly next to the hotel, where you can catch the 'short lake cruise' at 00:28 mins past the hour, arriving in Kilchberg at 00:02 past the hour. You get great views down the lake to the mountains as the boat crosses from Erlenbach to Thalwil.

When you arrive, I strongly recommend you take a stroll along the lake front path, which runs from Seebad Kusen, past the lifeboat station, around Kusnacht Horn, and along Hornweg to Zehntrotte, where you'll find the old boat house, which dates from around 1290. From there, walk up to the main road, Seestrasse, and you'll find Rico's, the Michelin Star restaurant once favoured by Tina Turner, who lived a couple of doors down, at Algonquin. You'll also see that us locals gather on the lakeside in good weather to swim, paddleboard, and picnic, so bring your swimwear.

"Whilst the hotel you have chosen is no doubt very nice, you have picked the wrong side of the Zurichsee for swift public transport..." Those of us who live here, manage very well accessing other destination as we have options via HB or Rapperswil. But thankyou for making my OH laugh out loud when I read your post to him.

O.k. for Küsnacht being an own village and not just part of Zurich suburb, with even slightly lower taxes than for residents of Zurich city 🙂

But the whole zone along the lake from Zurich to Küsnacht is built like being part of Zurich urban area, the wealthier part.

I understand what you mean, but there are large woodlands and vineyards separating the villages above the immediate lake front / Seestrasse area. What I like about living here is that the people who are wealthy, don't 'wear' it, and some of the most desirable homes are strictly rent controlled, where you aren't allowed to apply for them if you exceed a specific income, and you have to prove your links to the village, either through family connections or local employment. You honestly have no idea who you're speaking to unless they choose to tell you.

We moved here by happy accident, because I spotted a beautiful apartment which was available in winter (outside of the 3 moving dates), and which was one of the cheapest in the entire Zurich area because it was Befristet. Two moves later, we're still here because we love it.

Thank you for making me laugh too. Believe me I do know Zurich (prefer Hardbrucke station myself :-) )
