at Northeast-10 Championship Round vs Franklin Pierce
RINDGE, N.H. – After dropping its first game of the day against Franklin Pierce, the New Haven baseball team rebounded in an elimination game against Assumption defeating the Greyhounds 4-1 to advance to the NE10 Championship Round on Sunday. New Haven will need to win a pair of games against Franklin Pierce to secure an NE10 Championship on Saturday, with first pitch in game one set for 3:00 p.m.
In the win, right fielder Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) had the big bat knocking in three of the four runs, finishing the game 3-for-4 at the plate. His three hits were part of 12 total for the Chargers as he joined catcher Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) in leading the team with three hits as Cerruto also went 3-for-4 with a run score. Centerfielder Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and second baseman Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) each followed with two runs while Maucere accounted for the fourth RBI of the day.
On the mound sophomore Randy Ramnarace (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) earned the victory, improving to 5-2 on the year. Ramnarace came out of the pen to pitch five scoreless innings, surrendering just three hits and walking four batters. He also struck out a half dozen. Graduate pitcher Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) opened the game for New Haven, throwing four innings and credited with allowing the lone Greyhound run. Overall, he gave up four runs but did not walk a batter while striking out four.
In the opening game it was third baseman Joseph Frazzetta (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) who drove in the Chargers only run, doing so in the second inning on an fielder's choice to shortstop. He would finish the game with one hit which was part of six total for the Chargers, led by Budzik who finished 2-for-3 at the plate, making him 4-of-7 total on the day.
Starting pitcher Vincent Fusco (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay East Fishkill) suffered the loss in the game one, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing two runs, both earned, on four hits and a pair of walks. Matthew Minio (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and Christian De Risi (Hempstead, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) both came out of the pen for New Haven with Minio surrendering three runs and De Risi pitching 1.1 scoreless innings. All combined the Chargers pitching staff racked up seven strikeouts, two each from Fucso and De Risi and three from Minio.
Saturday marks the first time New Haven will play for an NE10 title since the 2018 season when took on Merrimack in the Championship Round falling to the Warriors.
