There were big smiles when the two monarchs met at Honnøbryggen in Oslo.
Colleagues, friends and relatives. The fresh king of Denmark (55) and King Harald of Norway (87), who is now Europe’s oldest monarch.
King Harald saluted when King Frederik went ashore and smiled widely when the Danish king walked towards him.
Both King Frederik and Queen Mary were greeted with hugs on both cheeks by King Harald and Queen Sonja.
King Frederik acknowledged with a royal kiss on the cheek of King Harald, whom he calls uncle Harald.
Denmark’s royal couple were greeted by cheers and shouts of welcome from the many who had turned up to catch a glimpse of the royals.
The crown prince couple also waved and greeted the large crowd.
Wedding day
The Danish royal couple are now in Norway for the first time as king and queen.
The visit takes place on the day four months after King Frederik and Queen Mary became Denmark’s new royal couple – and on the day 20 years after they were married in Vor Frue Church, the cathedral in Copenhagen.
On Tuesday morning, the Danish royal ship “Dannebrog” could be seen heading towards Oslo with the royal couple on board.
There it was met by the Norwegian royal ship “Norge”.
The world’s only two royal ships sailed together towards the Norwegian capital.
Oslo is decorated for state visits with Norwegian and Danish flags along Karl Johans gate in brilliant sunshine.
The Norwegian royal family had hit the big drum and found the most beautiful cars to show off the Danish royal couple.
Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit drove in the “wedding car” A-5.
King Harald and Queen Sonja also drove in an open car, in the A-1, the jewel in the royal fleet.
After the welcome ceremony at Honnøbryggen, it was King Frederik who took his seat next to King Harald in A-1.
– We look forward!
At Honnøbryggen, there were many spectators, including many school children with both Norwegian and Danish flags.
There were also many people along Karl Johan who caught a glimpse of the historic meeting.
– We were very impressed and got a good impression of Norway, say Flora and Liviana Enschescu from Romania, who are in Norway to visit their daughter.
Close to the Storting, NRK meets Jacques Holst has brought his daughter to catch a glimpse of the royal couple.
– For me, this started on New Year’s Eve. I was standing with my little daughter and was going to watch Queen Margrethe’s New Year’s speech, when it dawned on me that the Queen said she should not continue. So today I introduce the new royal couple to my daughter, says Jacques Holst.
– How does it feel?
– Surrealistic. Very fun to see them.
– I have lived abroad for many years, and Queen Margrethe has meant a lot to me. Her New Year’s speeches have followed me, she has always talked about those who live abroad. Now I will build a relationship with King Frederik, but I have great respect for him, partly because of his background in the Armed Forces. And as a sportsman, as well as the fact that he is very popular.
For two days, the Danish royal couple will participate in an extensive program with the Norwegian royal family.
– We look forward! For everything. It will be nice to be visited by the family in Denmark, said King Harald when he was to open the royal ship “Norge” for the season yesterday.
King Harald is the third son of Queen Margrethe, who abdicated in January and left the throne to her son.
King Frederik and Crown Prince Haakon are thus firm names.
“The state visit to Norway will highlight the historical ties, the close neighborly relationship between Denmark and Norway and the special relationship between the two royal houses.”
This is what the Danish royal house writes on its website.
King Frederik: – We are beginners
After the welcome ceremony at Honnøbryggen, the royal couples drove to the Palace.
There was an official photo shoot in the Bird Room, as well as a gift presentation.
At Akershus Fortress, King Frederik laid a wreath at the National Monument at Akershus Fortress, before the trip continued for the Danish royal couple to the Storting.
– Many thanks for your nice and very relaxed way of receiving us in the Storting. We are beginners, King Frederik smiled when he and Queen Mary had been given an introduction to the Storting and the Storting’s work by Storting President Masud Gharahkhani.
During the state visit to Norway, Denmark’s royal couple will also, among other things, meet researchers and representatives of the business world at Oslo Science City, go on a walk in Østmarka and on a city walk in the center of Oslo.
See the summary of how the first part of the state visit was:
Special day
When the Danish royal couple disembarked in Oslo, they could look back on 20 years of marriage at the same time.
He had been crown prince since he was three years old. He only found someone to share his life’s work with when he visited Australia for the first time, during the Summer Olympics in Sydney in 2000.
At the Slip In bar, his life took a decisive turn when he met an Australian woman who was out with some of her friends.
On 14 May 2004, she was followed by her father into the cathedral as Mary Donaldson from Australia, with an education in law and marketing.
She came out as Crown Princess Mary of Denmark after saying yes to Crown Prince Frederik, as he was then, and got a kingdom “in the bargain”.
Paying tribute to his wife: – Like made for the role
For 20 years they have prepared the ground. Prepared for the great task and laid the foundations for the king’s work.
– Mary is made for the role. She is aware of all the changes the world is facing, and she has clear thoughts about how she wants to be and assist me as queen, says King Frederik in the new book “Kongeord”.
– Mary is my partner and “wingman”, to use a pilot expression, and we have a super dynamic. It benefits us enormously when we prepare everything from church visits and award ceremonies to New Year’s tables and state visits.
They are now preparing for a two-day state visit to Norway.
Relatives by historical reason
When Denmark’s royal couple disembarked at Honnørbryggen in front of Oslo City Hall, they were welcomed by King Harald and Queen Sonja.
It happened just a stone’s throw from Vippetangen, where King Harald’s grandfather King Haakon disembarked when he arrived in Norway in 1905 as the first Norwegian king in modern times.
He had until then been a Danish prince with the name Prince Carl, but took the royal name Haakon when he was elected king of Norway.
Now it is the descendant who welcomes the Danish king.
