Is the Ipad Air 5th gen still worth buying? (price dropped to $399 on Amazon and Walmart)

Question

Dropped the price probably because they're trying to get rid of stock. I've been debating whether to just get the 5th gen (64gb) or new air model, mostly because of the new features and storage size.

I plan to draw, occasionally make animations and take notes for school. Not sure if 64 gb is enough for that, but the difference in price for getting the new air vs the 5th gen (+Apple Pencil) is $739 vs $531

How is the 5th gen putting up with today and would it be more worth to buy it than the new air?

The Air 5 64gb at $449 or even $399 is a great buy.

Is 64gb enough tho? My phone uses more than 100gb.

Most people don’t use their tablets the same as their smartphones. For some 64GB is more than enough and for others 64GB is just not enough.

That’s fair, I checked my phone usage, most of them were chat history and attachments and stuff

not for me i regret getting 64gb

thanks! That’s good to know! Last time iPads were on sale at the stores near me, they were all 64G and I was hesitant to get one.

Same, my iPad fills up quite a lot before it does the funni and dies back in January.

My Galaxy Tab is packed with stuff and is now completely full (3gig left) (out of 256)

I’ve got the 64gb, and since i mostly use it at home and don’t game I’ve just committed to streaming, and I’ve got no issues.

Yes it’s a great device! And if you don’t use iPad for big projects, and use it as an extension of your iPhone rather than your MacBook for content consumption 64 gb will be good for you, just don’t put all your photos/videos from ur iPhone on ur iPad. I have the air 5 and since getting it in 2022 I’ve began using it more than I thought I would (professionally) and got 64 gb so I’m upgrading to the new 13” pro, but my fiance does more than just fine with his 64gb

Just bought one now! I plan on using it for making short animations and drawings on procreate, as thats one of my hobbies. I'd say that my drawings are usually pretty detailed, but I have a seperate drawing tablet for anything "more professional". I also plan on making graphics for school and overall taking it around like I would as a laptop to organize things and do schoolwork. I'm not too fond of games so I'm not too worried about that taking space, I also have a external Icloud drive too!

I'm still kind of iffy on the 64 gb though, but do you think with my load it would be too much for the ipad?

I was looking for an ipad for my tutoring job, and the staff said something about if I needed to draw on procreate he would recommend the iPad Pro.

I see, thanks for the input! I'm now definitely considering buying an apple refurbished Ipad Pro (3rd gen and 256 gb) for $619, but it will be more expensive than my other two previous options. What would be the say here? Will it last me long enough to make the most of my money?

this is where i’m leaning too and i have a very similar use case.

buy the pro with the biggest storage you can, as procreate files can be heavy and you won’t have to worry too much about having to transfer them elsewhere if you do.

plus the extra ram will allow more layers while drawing and overall better performance! AND the pros have that nice 120hz refresh rate which is much better for any media consumption or animation etc

you don’t need the latest one, but definitely one of the refurbished pros is good!

Well I would really recommend don’t buy a new 5th gen, try to get a refurbished pro model, trust me you will get more satisfied, cause really the things you mentioned will works a lot times more superior on pro models. Plus they have more than 64gigs storage.

Got mine for $449, loving it. I’d say get the 5th gen if it’s even lower now

Yes. Fantastic deal

I got one. I’ll mainly use it for guitar lessons. I don’t do any drawing or editing so the 64gb is enough.

Yeah its great , should be fine for the things listed , you wont run into performance issues , and pencil gen 2 is very similar to pro

I traded in my iPad 8 for an open box Air 5 for $360 at Best Buy earlier this evening. I’m concerned about eye fatigue, as the iPad 8 gave me none, but we’ll see how this one rolls. Trade in was $135, and Apple charges $129 for a “battery swap”, so I was at a crossroads of what to do. Battery still lasted several days but I figured why not trade it in, pay a little more, and have something new with warranty.

For folks who have issues with 64gb of storage, cant you just use an external hard drive for when your memory fills up? I just purchased one and am new to the iPad ecosystem but if I understand correctly, the 5th gen iPad will connect to external hard drives no?
