Wolfgang Van Halen Shares His Phone Call To David Lee Roth: ‘This Ain’t No Joke’

Wolfgang Van Halen thought there wouldn’t be any problems when inviting David Lee Roth to jam with them.

During the musician’s episode of Behind the Music on Paramount+, Wolf revealed he started to play with Eddie and Alex Van Halen in 2006. When the Mammoth WVH frontman joined them, Alex encouraged him to pick up the bass. At first, it was just for fun, but they realized Wolfgang’s talent. They felt a new connection beyond family and decided to call DLR back to jam. The rocker remembered what he told Roth:

“I wrote out an exact wording of what I should say so I could call David Lee Roth and ask if he wanted to come over and jam. I remember really specifically, my dad made me finish it with ‘this ain’t no joke.’ I basically was like, ‘Hi. This is Wolfgang Van Halen and I’ve been jamming with my uncle and my father at ‘5150’ and we’d have a lot of fun if you came and joined us. This ain’t no joke.'”

Wolfgang Admits He Was Naive At The Time

Back then, Wolf didn’t have any negative thoughts at all as he continued to say:

“It was like, ‘Oh I’m playing with my family and this is going to be really exciting. Everything’s going to be great and nothing bad is ever going to happen’ [laughs]. Shows you how young I was.”

DLR And Wolfgang Don’t Get Along Well Right Now

Roth posted a YouTube video in January and mocked Wolfgang. The singer claimed that Wolfgang complained about not getting enough attention onstage during their tour. DLR also said Wolfgang had security remove two women Roth had invited. Wolf addressed his comments in a March interview on The Morning X radio show:

“I guess I’m honored he even thinks about me as much as he seems to. I guess you have to take what he says with a grain of salt considering he also said that he wrote ‘Eruption’ and came up with the Frankenstein [Eddie Van Halen’s red white and black striped guitar]… He said he wrote all the solos that Dad wrote. I guess that’s all I can say. I seem to have been born into this Van Halen drama that has come way before me. And I guess now that my dad isn’t here to be a target, I guess he went to the next best thing.”

Later, after he attacked Wolf, Roth posted a video showing him back in California. The video includes pictures of him with other rockers, including one with the Mammoth WVH singer. This might be a way for Roth to apologize.
