ATP Race Update: Zverev Climbs Back In Top Two And Chases Race Leader Sinner

by Nurein Ahmed

Alexander Zverev made enormous progress in this week's ATP Race to Turin following his title-winning fortnight at the Italian Open.

The German won his second title in Rome on Sunday, beating Nicolas Jarry in the final. He was also awarded 1000 points, which moved him back into the top two of the ATP race with 3085 points.

Zverev briefly led this race in the early weeks of the season after helping his country win the second edition of the United Cup, but Jannik Sinner eclipsed him after the Australian Open.

Sinner remains at the top with 4500 points, although he couldn't add to that tally in his home tournament in Rome because of a hip injury. Daniil Medvedev drops to the third spot, while Casper Ruud remains in fourth place ahead of Andrey Rublev.

Stefanos Tsitsipas (6th) is above Carlos Alcaraz. Like Sinner, the Spaniard did not play in the last ATP 1000 before Roland Garros. Alex de Minaur, Grigor Dimitrov, and Hubert Hurkacz complete the Top 10.

Tommy Paul is now the top-performing American this season in 12th place with 1425 points after reaching the Rome semifinals. Chile's Alejandro Tabilo, who advanced to his first semifinal at Masters level on clay in the same tournament, is 13th.

Tabilo is above World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, whom he defeated last fortnight. The Serbian has topped this race eight times in his career but faces a mountain to climb this season.

Nicolas Jarry is the second Chilean to be in the Top 20 of the race. He was runner-up in Rome and is now 17th with 1185 points. Holger Rune, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Karen Khachanov also feature in the Top 20 list.

The ATP Race to Turn will determine the eight men qualifying for the ATP Finals at the end of the regular tennis season. It will also crown the ATP year-end No. 1, the player with the most points during the season.
