The USA anthem rang out over the skateboarding venue at the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) for the second time in hours as Tate Carew won the men’s park event in Shanghai, People's Republic of China on Sunday (19 May).

Just hours before his teammate Jagger Eaton took an emotional gold in men’s street before rushing off to park where he added a bronze.

Eaton led the standings after the first run, and managed to make a small improvement on his second run to boost the score up to 91.61 points.

But it was his teammate Carew who impressed the most on the second attempt. His 93.33 points bumped the world No.4 from second last to first place and would not be surpassed for the rest of the competition.

“Biggest win of my career, by far," Carew said after about his victory at the Olympic Qualifier Series. “I’ve been working really hard. I really enjoy this course, and the group of people who were there with me in the finals. We’ve all been pushing each other really hard all week.”

Carew fell on his third run and was waiting anxiously as just one more rider, reigning Olympic champion Keegan Palmer, was due to drop into the bowl.

First in qualifying, Palmer fell on his first run while attempting a fakie to fakie five switch but still managed to collect a high score that put him in the Top 5. After an early fall on his second attempt, it all came down to the third run for the Australian and he savoured the pressure, motioning with his arms for the spectators to support him.

With the crowd's cheers following his every move, Palmer managed to complete a full, trick-packed run to finish off his OQS appearance in Shanghai. The skater himself, however, appeared unsure if that would be enough to put him in medal standing, saying “That’s not it” to himself as he paced on the side-lines while waiting for the scores.

When 92.30 flashed on the screen, Palmer jumped on the spot from surprise and ran to Carew to congratulate him.

“I’m so stoked for Tate," Palmer said. "I do most of my training at home with him. He comes to Australia, I go to America. We’re great working partners.

"This is the first time in a long time that we’ve both been on first and second. I get goosebumps talking about it.”

With his second place finish, Palmer bumped teammate Kieran Woolley to fourth with 90.19 points.

All three Brazilian skaters in the final finished off the podium, with Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Pedro Barros leading the pack in fifth place with 88.96 points on the scoreboard.
