‘I wouldn’t do that again’: Tom Brady weighs in on ‘bittersweet’ Netflix roast

Tom Brady says Netflix's comedy roast was fun, but that he "wouldn’t do that again" because of how it affected "the people that I care about the most in the world."

Nine days after the wildly popular Tom Brady roast aired live on Netflix, the former Patriots quarterback weighed in on his decision to participate in the comedy special.

During an appearance on The Pivot Podcast, Brady told ex-NFLers Fred Taylor, Ryan Clark, and Channing Crowder that the way the special affected his kids meant that if asked, he “wouldn’t do that again.”

“I loved when the jokes were about me. I thought they were so fun,” Brady said. “I didn’t like the way that it affected my kids.”

Brady said that he agreed to the roast because he found himself watching comedy specials while stuck indoors during the pandemic, and that he had struck up a relationship with “RoastMaster General” Jeff Ross.

The quarterback called the entire experience “bittersweet,” saying that he loved the jokes and allowing fans to see “another side” of him, but not the impact it had on his loved ones.

“You do something that you think [will go] one way, and then all of a sudden you realize, ‘I wouldn’t do that again because of the way that affected the people that I care about the most in the world,’” Brady said.

Gisele Bundchen ‘disappointed’ by Brady roast

Tom Brady’s ex-wife, Gisele Bundchen, was reportedly unhappy with the roast. A source close to the supermodel told People magazine that Bundchen was “deeply disappointed by the disrespectful portrayal of her family on Sunday evening’s roast show,” and that her children were “affected by the irresponsible content that was broadcasted.”

Many of the jokes from the Brady roast involved Bündchen and her reported new relationship with jiu-jitsu instructor Joaquim Valente.

Comedian Nikki Glaser, who later made a second unprintable joke about Bündchen, chided Brady for letting the supermodel slip away.

“Tom Brady. Five-time Super Bowl MVP, most career wins, most career touchdowns. You have seven rings — well, eight, now that Gisele gave hers back,” Glaser said. “The only thing dumber than saying yes to this roast was when you said, ‘Hey babe, you should try jiu-jitsu.’”

Brady and Bündchen, who married in 2009, have two children together, Benjamin, 14, and Vivian, 11. Brady also has another son, Jack, 16, from a previous relationship with actress Bridget Moynahan.

Ultimately, Brady told The Pivot Podcast that he was “naïve” for agreeing to the roast, and called it a learning experience.

“I think it’s a good lesson for me as a parent,” Brady said. “I’m going to be a better parent as I go forward because of it. At the same time, I’m happy everyone who was there had a lot of fun.”
