Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri’s announcement of his retirement from international football has sparked an outpour of emotions on social media.

The news of Sunil Chhetri’s retirement from international football has caused a stir on social media on Thursday (May 16), with various prominent celebrities sharing their reactions. Chhetri, who finishes his career as the most prolific goal-scorer for the country with 94 goals, announced his retirement through a 10-minute video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, today, where he explained his decision in detail.

“The recollection of the last 19 years is a combination of duty, pressure and immense joy. I never thought that these are the many games I would play for the country, good or bad but now I did but these last one and half two months I did. And this (the feeling) was very strange. I was probably going towards the decision that this game (against Kuwait) is going to be my last,” Chhetri said in the video message.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted a heartfelt message, praising Chhetri as an icon not only for football but for sports as a whole.

Indian cricket star Virat Kohli also commented on Chhetri’s Instagram video, expressing his pride in his “brother.” Kohli wrote, “My Brother, PROUD.”

India’s starting goalkeeper, Gurpreet Singh Sadhu, also reacted to the announcement on social media, expressing his wish to change Chhetri’s mind while understanding his decision. He called for the country to celebrate Chhetri’s remarkable career for the national team.

Sunil Chhetri holds the record for the most goals scored by an Indian player, with 94 goals to his name. Among active players, he ranks third in goals scored globally, only behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. 

Additionally, Chhetri is fourth in the all-time list of international goal-scorers. He is also the most-capped player for the Indian football team, recently marking his 150th appearance for the national team in March, where he scored against Afghanistan in Guwahati.
