I mean it was his audience after all, teenage girls and college aged women which would have been the key demo for a romantic comedy or romance drama. During his time on 90210, he did Buffy the Vampire Slayer and 8 Seconds which I respect for seemingly playing against type although capitalizing on a bad boy/romantic lead type of role might have benefitted his film career which floundered almost immediately.

I don't know if Buffy was against type. He was basically just Dylan.

Buffy and 8 Seconds weren't exactly antithetical to what his audience would've wanted. His problem was that the films he did around that time just weren't that good (aside from The Fifth Element, but that was towards the end of 90210).

Aziz! Light!

Thought he was a decent actor, but he didn't seem to have much range. Hes always....Dylan.

Pitt and DeCaprio didn't exactly establish their careers with romcoms.

True but they helped solidify a fanbase from which they depended on as they then diversified in their roles.

‘Thelma and Louise’ and ‘Cool World’ aren’t romantic comedies, so I don’t understand what you are talking about. Pitt got his first serious attention from audiences and critics from Thelma and Louise, and his first widely seen leading role was ‘Cool World.’

As far as Leo’s first critical break, that was What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, which most people would not categorize as a romantic comedy or dramatic romance film.

It’s not about what he wanted to do or what he should have done. It’s all about the studios and whether they thought he was right for a role. Success on TV rarely translates to success in movies (although there are very notable exceptions), and actors have very little power in the direction of their career until they become A-listers.

Perry wasn't considered a great actor. He was almost 30 when he started 90210.

He did calendar girl.

That was Jason Priestly.

No, Jason Priestly is a character Luke Perry played. Range.
