I Am Legend 2 gets a new update from Will Smith after several months of radio silence on the project. Released in 2007, I Am Legend stars Smith as scientist Robert Neville, the last remaining survivor in New York City after a virus transformed the rest of the population into vampire-like beings. The film was a hit, and, after years of speculation, I Am Legend 2 was confirmed to be in development in 2022, with Smith set to star opposite Michael B. Jordan. Few updates on the projects have emerged since, however.

In a recent interview with ET, Smith confirms that development work is still ongoing for I Am Legend 2. While the actor and producer doesn't provide any indication of when the movie will actually start shooting, he reveals that he recently had a productive meeting with Jordan, who will also produce. "We had a couple weeks together about a month ago. I think it's looking good. [We have some] really solid ideas... I think we're going to make it on screen together. That dude is the truth, so I would love to do that."

Director Francis Lawrence's 2007 movie ends with Neville dying in a fiery explosion as his house becomes overrun with Darkseekers. This obviously raises questions about how Neville will be returning in a sequel, but Smith has confirmed that the follow-up will take I Am Legend's alternate ending as canon. The alternate ending, which is more faithful to the ending of Robert Matheson's 1954 book upon which the film is based, sees Neville survive and realize that, to the Darkseekers, he is the monster.

No story details have been revealed about I Am Legend 2, but original movie writer Akiva Goldsman will be returning to pen the script. It's also unclear whether any actors from the original will return as part of I Am Legend 2's cast, with Alice Braga being an obvious candidate. Braga appears in the original movie as Anna, a fellow survivor, and the movie ends with her reaching a colony of survivors and handing over a cure.

Braga revealed last spring that she would be open to returning as Anna in I Am Legend 2.

The alternate ending doesn't explicitly include a cure, but it could still come into play in the sequel as Neville joins a new community of survivors. This would give the sequel the opportunity to further explore themes from the book relating to who the real monsters are in the story and whether humans and the Darkseekers, who are sentient beings, can coexist. Many questions still remain about I Am Legend 2, but Smith's latest update confirms that work on the project continues.
