Mary's Obituary

Mary Arlean “Leany” Pulley Crawley was called from labor to reward on Sunday, May 12, 2024. She was a God-fearing woman, beloved wife, mother, G.G., sister, aunt, and friend. Her infectious smile, passion for life, caring spirit and welcoming demeanor will live on. She will be remembered for her eloquent speeches and kind words.

Mary was born December 15, 1953, to the late Stephen W. Pulley, Sr. and Mary Flowers Pulley in Stony Creek, Virginia. Ancestors awaiting Mary’s arrival at the pearly gates of Heaven are Mom and Dad and her brothers, Charles King, Stephen W. Pulley, Jr and her little brother, Stanley L. Pulley.

Mary was a dedicated church worshipper. Early in life she joined the Little Bethel Baptist Church in Stony Creek, Virginia. After marrying her high school sweetheart, Timothy A. Crawley, she moved her fellowship to his home church, Shiloh Baptist Church (Dinwiddie) Blackstone, Virginia. She became the Church Clerk and enjoyed serving the Lord in that capacity for 33 years. Mary was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church Women’s Ministry where she served as Secretary. She was a BELIEVER!

She was a proud graduate of the Dinwiddie County High School Class of 1972 and a 1976 graduate of John Tyler Community College (now Brightpoint Community College). She retired after serving 30 years at Virginia State University.

Known affectionately as “Leany Beany”, Leany is survived by devoted husband of 47 years, Timothy A. Crawley; daughter and best friend, Bridget Crawley Betts (Roger); son, “Leany Boy” Brian Crawley (Angie); grandchildren who she cherished and loved, Bryce Person, who is more like her second son, Ashton and Harper Betts, Aiden, Ace and Alani Crawley; and god-daughter, Ashley Jones; four sisters, Martha Kay Pulley-Jones (Milton), Monica Pulley-Stith, Monique Pulley-Gregory (Jason) and Jackie Pulley (widow to late brother Stephen); and sister-in- love; Alfreda Jackson;  brother; John Pulley; uncles, Rev. Alfred Flowers and James Malone; aunts, Agnes Pulley Thorne, Pearl Pulley, Elsie Parham, Irene Flowers Burrow, Doris Flowers Cooper (Clarence), Bernice Pulley Harvell, Susie Pulley Allen and Rose Ann Flowers; great aunt:, Bernice Flowers Brothers; sisters-in-law, Patricia Gould (John), Joanne Harris (Leroy deceased); brothers-in-law, Elder James Crawley (Minister Ann) and Robert Crawley; a pride of nieces and nephews that she absolutely adored to include, Travis Crawley, Jerry Crawley, Dr. Shavon Pulley, Stephen Ryan Pulley, De’Quincy Pulley (Janessa) Jason Jones (Natasha), Olivia Pulley, Kennedy Pulley, Myiah Stith, Austin Parham Gregory, Miles Gregory, Justin Parker Pulley, Siara` Hannah-Pulley, Mario Crawley, Olisa Holsey (Tabious), Anica Baugh, Cheryl Muse and Cullen Harris; and a host of great nieces and nephews.

Other devoted friends who will keep her memory alive are Billy Porter, Cynthia Moore, Barbara Browder, Sharlene Anderson Wrenn, Stephanie McNeil, Claristine Moore, Wanda Short, Minister Naomi Pearson, Joe McKinney, Machelle Vaughan and Cheryl Hunley and cousins: Hellion (Butch) Flowers, Evelyn Flowers, Jerri Flowers Coles, Michael Flowers, Kinard Cooper (Kimberly), Jessica Flowers and Jacqueline Flowers and a host of other cherished family and friends.

Mary's bonus daughters are Katrina Flowers, Katrina Jenkins and Ambre Thompson. 

A special thank you to Dr. S. Frelier, Walnut Hill Pharmacy, and the wonderful Staff of Intrepid Hospice USA for thir professional and compassionate services.

Services will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday, May 18, 2024 at West End Baptist Church, 6506 Boydton Plank Road, North Dinwiddie, VA, the Rev. Dr. Hebert W. Anderson, eulogist. The interment will be private in the Flowers Family Cemetery.
