During Walt Disney Company's Upfront presentation in New York yesterday, it was confirmed that Marvel Television has been resurrected...albeit with some pretty major changes. Find more details here...

Marvel Television was originally a separate entity from Marvel Studios, spearheaded by Jeph Loeb under the watchful eye of former Marvel Entertainment Chairman Isaac Perlmutter.

Before being shut down in 2019 (when Disney handed full control of all things Marvel to Kevin Feige), Marvel Television produced the likes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Netflix's Defenders slate, and even the likes of Cloak & Dagger, The Runaways, and M.O.D.O.K.

The vast majority of characters were off-limits to Marvel Television, with Marvel Studios' desires prioritised by Disney. For Feige, Loeb's outfit was an annoyance, particularly as much of what they produced - Inhumans, for example - damaged the MCU brand.

Marvel Studios has since discovered that producing TV shows isn't as easy as it looks. Last year, the decision was made to creatively overhaul Daredevil: Born Again and the studio's small screen output as a whole, with "Head Writers" finally replaced with proper showrunners.

We've yet to see the impact of that, but during the Walt Disney Company's Upfront presentation in New York yesterday evening, Marvel Television made its return...minus everyone who was involved before 2019, of course.

To get the MCU back on track, the idea is for Marvel Studios to focus solely on movies, getting back to quality over quantity. Marvel Animation will continue producing the likes of What If...? and X-Men '97, while Marvel Television will focus on Disney+ TV shows and small screen content.

While we're sure Feige is still overseeing everything, this likely means specific executives have been assigned to each division. That should result in the same producers no longer having to work on movies and TV shows at the same time, a decision which resulted in a decline in quality which led to the negative reception to projects like Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Secret Invasion

Hopefully, Marvel will reveal more details about the changes soon. This appears to be a step in the right direction, though.

"We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, or a maximum of three," Disney CEO Bob Iger said last week. "And we’re working hard on what that path is."

He added, "Overall, I feel great about the slate. It’s something that I’ve committed to spending more and more time on. The team is one that I have tremendous confidence in and the IP that we’re mining, including all the sequels that we’re doing, is second to none."

Stay tuned for updates. You can see the new Marvel Television logo below.

It was Marvel Television all along

@ProfessorWhy - Tend to think it is a better idea to make TV seem less required even if connected as was considered less an issue of 'required viewing' in the AoS and Netflix days when we actualy got a LOT more hours of Marvel shows per year than we have had with D+ ones post Endgame that for some reason is now considered too much content.

@Apophis71 - I think it's considered too much content because of what you said. Back then you could watch daredevil without having to watch anything else. If you wanted, cool, you'd enjoy more, but if you don't, it's alright... but these days everything is interconnected so to watch a TV show you have to watch three movies, people don't want that commitment with entertainment, we just want to have fun after work or school or a long day or just relaxing

@braunermegda - True but then never felt we needed to know more from any of the D+ shows for the films than we did from AoS for Winter Soldier and AoU at a time when they were selling the it's all connected and AoS fully so with the films...

It is more the idea it is required exists than that realy being the case most the time as when thus far has anything in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, Hawkeye, She-Hulk, MoonKnight, Echo or Secret Invasion actualy been required to know for any of the films.

So only been two shows even close to being required viewing both of which can be binged in a four or five hours total, yet only need at most a 5min recap to know what was needed from them for the films, and told you in MoM and The Marvels what you needed to know from the shows.

Interested in DD but that's it.

But only IF word of mouth is good, as usual.

I'll take this as an admission of defeat, but it's still just a bandaid to the problem.

“Agatha all along” I’m dying. That little song by her is really catchy. Is that the final title for the show or was it the title all along…..😅😅😂🤣

I hope the Agatha is a massive troll show. Every episode has a completely different title, they tease Mephisto only for him to never show up, etc.

On that note the finale of X-Men 97 was killer.

Smart to seperate Television and Animation from Studios. If they het different creatives to lead each division, I think the quality and output is much better to oversee.

@bkmeijer1 - I think Animation is overseen by someone else but not sure about tv.

Television and Animation are apparently run by the same person ,Brad Winderbaum

@TheVisionary25 - makes sense, since he was already part of the streaming department I believe. Wonder if they're gonna split it up though. I could see Nate Moore or Stephen Broussard head one of the other departments

@DrReedRichards - as much as I miss that show , I don’t need it be resurrected since it had a good ending

I wouldn’t mind seeing some of those characters again in different projects though

Feige really shut down Marvel TV just to rebuild it in his image 😅

I'll never understand the decision to split their time and effort between movies and TV. Not only were their movies averaging a billion each, some of them were hitting two billion.

@Th3Batman - Bob Chapek. That’s the reason.

Disney+ was Iger's baby. Chapek still reported to Iger up until November 2021 - a year before he was fired as CEO.

That’s a good idea , I’m glad they are having different divisions now that will have their own heads that likely report back to Feige while he can just focus on the movies directly.

Past issues aside , I’m glad Marvel are genuinely trying to better themselves now they have had some experience in tv and realized that you can’t run it like the movie division so I hope this works out well for them and us!!.

The old Marvel Television might have been inconsistent but it does hold a special place in my heart and hopefully it has garnered more respect from some seeing how difficult this can be.

So they went through the whole mess of shutting down the Marvel TV division just to end up... creating a Marvel TV division. Smart.
